Default Any suggestions... replacement Head Unit

I'm looking for a new head unit in as close to the original silver as possible. Preferably a pop up screen with NAV but not completely necessary.

I realise that there are other threads on this subject but every unit mentioned is old (trust me I've been through and checkled on the one's I liked) - and only available 2nd hand.

Any new units out there that look the part and fit in perfectly with the dash (green lume would be best also)?

I am going through the same search. I finally took the plunge yesterday and ordered the JVC KD-AVX77 from here. With promo code 'BAWLA10' I got it and shipping for $410... not a bad deal considering what others I've seen are going for. Why this one? My main concerns were compatibility with iPhone 3Gs, built in Bluetooth, and a touch screen.

I'll keep you updated on install and post pics with a review once I get it in.

Okay, here it is all installed and everything... I'm happy to report so far, so good! The Bluetooth works very well, completely compatible with my iPhone via cable, and the touch screen is pretty handy too. I was worried the unit wouldn't look good because it's not silver like the console, but I'm pretty dang happy with it!

Nice job... I have a confession... last week, I ended up buying the one below this (identical but no BlueTooth) - the AVX55. I will take some pics - it is identical though so will look the same as yours does.

So far, I have bought an iPod especially for the glovebox and it works brilliantly; make sure you set iPod control to 'head' and then find the 'list' button under settings while in iPod. There, you can select playlists and the like. Don't mean to patronise; it's just that I couldn't find it at first

Also, with visuals; watching DVD's - I find best option is 'ultra cinema scope' - as it fills the screen but the stretch isn;t too bad; of course you lose parts of the edge.

Great head unit so far! Just very very expensive here in the U.K

That's fantastic! I'm glad to hear you're liking yours as well. Thanks so much for the tips. I think I've finally got it figured out now... after reading the user guide probably twenty times. It did take some getting used to though.

I'm not sure if your model does it too, but on mine, you can move your finger in a circle in the middle of the screen to adjust the volume and swipe left or right to change songs. I find that feature pretty handy.

My next task is to figure out how to do the bypass so that it will play DVDs without the emergency brake on. Not that big of a deal for me, but my fiance would like it for longer trips. I'll have to tell him about the 'ultra cinema scope.' I'm also trying to find the best setup for my iPhone as right now I just plug it in and set it where the emergency brake is.

The head unit is pretty expensive here in the US also, around $500, but I think it's worth it. Not many people have heard of it, but I enjoy listening to Pandora while I'm driving. They made an app for the iPhone and now that my area has 3g, it works real well. Sounds great in the car too!

Yes I had the installer set it up to bypass the brake meaning DVDs can play all the time. Yes the finger circle and swipe motions work and are indeed very handy (excuse the pun)!

So far, it's very good and I'm happy with it. Mine has no Bluetooth; do you find that you use the Bluetooth and if so, what for? Am I missing out big time? The iPhone compatibility seems to be through the cable so far as I can see...

Was your unit "Plug and play"? AVX55. did you need the antenna adapter?

An adapter was needed, yes... I believe it to be the adapter you mention - in any case, it cost only £4 so around $7. Apart from that, it went straight in - despite it being a bit of a squeeze at the back... a whole ton of cables and wires come out of these units. So far, so good; still is a pleasure to use and passengers always love watching Transformers, or the like, as we drive along

Thanks for replying so fast.... but I still need to know, was the unit Plug and play or did you have to do alot of re-wiring and bypass the amps.

No, there was no major rewiring as far as I can remember. Unless the installer was doing a load of stuff that I didn't see... it was all very straightforward.

Maybe; PM Wendyjo and see what her take on it is.
