Default New Amp in Stock Location???

Has any one put a aftermarket amp in the stock location. Starting my radio upgrade and replaceing the stock amp with a Alpine PDX-4.150 amp and just wondering if it would fit in the stock location and if anybody think it might get to hot. Alpine is W 10.13 in./D 7.56 in./H 2.44 in. and the stock is
W 8 1/8in. / D 6in. / h 1 3/4 in. I just dont no if there any room to play with the passager kickpanel back on . Any help or advice would be great

Thanks

I have located my amp behind my drivers seat (but I am short LOL) and I would be very hesitant to mount that thing under the floorboard simply for heat issues. I have messed with a lot of the PDX alpine stuff, it is incredibly effiecient, but just like anything else using that much power, it gets warm.

Just my 0.02. Good luck finding a spot, I still have another amp and 2 capacitors I need to install, but finding a spot is the hard part....

Just curious if any headway has been made on replacing the stock amp in the factory location? I'm toying with pulling mine and the factory subs and selling them off to help fund a nice amp and set of components for the doors. I'll probably not replace the factory subs and add a sub to the trunk.

Cory, I think you are on the right track. I ended up with a second set of components in mine, as well as subs in the trunk. The added highs are much needed for the added bass, but it sounds AWESOME.

Let me know if you end up with anything in the factory amp location, but between possible moisture and lack of cooling, I would not attempt this....

I've been toying with installing a marine amp to avoid a moisture issue in the factory location, problem is that almost all amps are much larger than the factory amp if the OP measurements are correct. I'm thinking I'll go with a 2+1 amp to power the doors and a sub. I'll probably still pull the factory amp and rear subs to help fund the project. What components did you go with? Headunit pushing them or external amp?

I do not think I have ever run across a 2+1 amp. Plenty of 5 channels, which, if I were buying one for this car, I would go with, and even some 6 and 7 channels...

I am currently running a second set of infiniti components, but both sets are still running off the aftermarket HU I installed. I have a 4 channel amp and 2 one farad caps to install, but no where to put them

a 2+1 is just a 4 channel that supports running one pair bridged. It is less rare now a days back in the old days (2000) it was kind of a new option. I just hate to take up a bunch of room in the trunk... did you see my post on tactile transducers? I'm looking into them also to add some rumble without the SPLs.

I guess I never heard of a 4 channel, bridged in any way, referred to as a 2+1, but then again, I have not had to shop for car audio in quite some time LOL.

If by tactile inducers are you referring to something like bass shakers that attach under each seat and give the illusion of more bass than is actually there by physically vibrating the seat?

IMO, this is like adding a turbo BOV when there is no turbo. It is not hard to make enough bass in this tiny car to shake everything A decent single 10 with any wattage behind it is going to produce a lot of sound in the cabin. I can see using those things in a massive room like a movie theatre to enhance the experience, but in a tiny car, there are much more fun ways of making things shake

Do you know the approximate dimensions? Thanks!

I know this is old so sorry for the bump, but should later searchers find it useful -

I have two JL Audio Slash series amps stacked in the stock amp location. Lost a few inches of floor space but never have any problems with overheating, etc.

Sorry for the long delay. The guy I had doing my install had a death in the family, then joined the army . So been looking for someone here in Pensacola to do the install. Went to the local car stereo places and have not got a quote for less then $600.00. So waiting for some replys from Craiglist. But I still hoping to get it installed in the stock location, saw on a earlier post that someone have done it with the same amp.

Will update when it done

It shouldn't be too hard to do yourself. Just bolt it down to the factory mounting bracket under the carpet. I sure as hell wouldnt pay $600 to have it down.

Heck for that, come on up to Nashville and Ill do it lol

Yup. That's where your current amp is. You were saying you need to find a location for a second amp. I was suggesting it might work as well behind the passenger seat.

Ahhhh I see. I do not mind mine behind the drivers seat since I am short and the only one who needs to be driving my car is me LOL but the seat can still go back far enough to accomodate someone 6'2 to 6'4 depending on if they are torso or legs tall. I would not do this to the passenger side because there is no lowering function on the passenger seat in my car, so I would loose several inches of room for whoever is in the passenger seat, and I have some tall friends.

Eventually, as with many of these projects, once she becomes a garage queen, I will make a custom fiberglass enclosure with amp rack and all, really make it look nice....

Hey everybody

The $600 quote I got was for a full install: Head unit, doors speaker, subs and the amp.

But I been searching thru the forum and have gathered enough information that I think about trying to installing it myself. The only unanswered question I have is. Do I need an Amp wiring kit for the power and ground or can I just use the same stock wiring that already there for the stock amp
