Dennis
normally to unlock the doors i press unlock on the keyfob,
is it meant to unlock the doors for me when i get near the car? or am i mis-understanding keyless entry?

You misunderstand keyless entry. All it means is that you can unlock the car without the key using the key fob.
What you are referring to is called Proximity Unlock. Crossfires never had that as an option.
