well it rarely cuts out.
it usually cuts out when i am in a tunnel or something.
only problem is,
the antenna is also the transmitter for the FM.
if you are using the built in FM modulator.
so in that case you wanna be as close as possible to the crossfire antenna.
but where i put it, it works fine and i get the occasional static interference but nothing too bad.

Are you sure the FM modulator is in the antenna?

right above where the rear view mirror is stuck on the windshield on the thin metal part of the car.
i ran the wire inside the rubber strip that runs along the top of the windscreen and down the same rubber strip to the inside of the car.
very easy to do and looks good.
if my description sux i can take a pic for you.
A picture would be great if you don't mind.

Kmarei - I stopped by one of the local auto sound shops that is supposed to be an award winner at several shows. He was talking about mounting it near the regular antenna and then running the wires through the same grommet. It wants big $$$ to install this but then I probably jacked the price up a bit when I asked to replace the speakers with something a little better which then moved onto adding an amp, etc.

Now back to reality and what I really want is just the XM Radio so if you could post a photo that would be great of just PM me with it.

Thanks.

I've got my antenna mounted in front on the roof above the windshield.

I must have missed where you said what kind of XM Radio you have...
You say the FM Modulator is also the antenna.
I'm a rookie but...
My two Roadys (one in the garage and the other in a box not being used right now) each have a FM Modulator Box (Wireless) that is part of the cigarette lighter plug BUT THEY BOTH ALSO HAVE SEPARATE Antennas.
My Commander in my Sierra Denali has a XM Box with the Modulator built in BUT it has a separate Antenna also. There is a splitter but that gives me reception on the stock radio.
My Pioneer in my Bonneville has a XM Box that plugs into the head unit BUT also has a separate Antenna.
My SkyFi in my MAZDA 3S HB has a built in modulator in the XM Radio itself and it has a separate antenna.
My Portable XM Radio (used with a Roady II) has a built-in FM modulator (Wireless) but also has a separate antenna. The antenna is on top of the headphone strap.
AND last, but definitely not least... the Pioneer that is in my XF has a separate XM Box that plugs directly into the head unit AND YES...it also has a separate antenna.
Please share the type you have with this "NEW" technology.
In fact, I even run a 2 1/2 inch "Shorty" antenna (from an AUDI) in place of the long whip antenna that comes on the XF Roadster. I never listen to regular FM anyway, so reception is of no concern.
BTW I have my XM Antenna mounted between the "Roll Bars" on my Roadster.

I'm assuming yours is working OK even though its mounted to glass?

bmerfan,

I ran my wire in through the grommet found at the top of the hatch. Then the wire runs through the headliner, the trim around the rear side window, down behind the seat belt, under the sill plate trim, then up under the dash, and out the glove box door where my Roady2 is mounted to the right hand center vent. The wire is hidden the entire way. Took a little while, but it looks good.
Just to clarify the purpose of mounting the antenna on metal is to establish a good ground plane around the antenna. This does indeed enhance the antenna performance by several dB. Note however the antenna will work without it, it is just that you will have less drop outs and loss with a metal ground plane behind your antenna. This is true for both the satellite signal and the terrestrial repeater signal (different frequencies) that the satellite radio services use.

Cheers.

In my convertible I have XM, ran the XM antenna out through the existing FM antenna. Started by pulling the existing antenna and running the XM wire in between the rubber pad and down the same path as the FM wire, and then ran the XM back to the radio.

I have mine in the exact same place, except on the driver's side. I don't get reception in my garage, but I have no problems anywhere else.

My Sirius antenna is right above my brake light. Where it belongs, it looks factory.
