If you can, avoid the FM modulator...the sound is SOOO much better with a direct connection. Although I have an aftermarket head unit (with an extra jack run), you might be able to get an aux out (RCA jack) run out to plug into the default stereo.
If that's not an option, I've had good experience with iTrip. However, if you are in a urban area, it might be tough to find an open FM channel.

None of those work, I tried a cuople and they just plain suck.

If you don't mind the look, I recommend you ditch the stock head unit and you get one with an AUX input.

Here are some pics of my car.

Does anyone know for sure whether or not the stock radio has an AUX input? I assume it doesn't but would be pretty happy if it did. My car is leased so I don't have the option of changing the head unit.

Yeah I know I should just buy another headunit, but that wont solve all the problems because I really want it to be mobile, if I want to take it in my other cars, or friends car, or work. I am eventualky going to get a new headunit, with the inputs on it, but for now which is the best fm modulator to get right now? I heard belkin kinda sucks and i heard monster is okay, any suggestions

I talked to the manufacturer (Becker) several months ago and was told by them that there is no aux input capability. Even if your car is leased, you could swap out the head unit and swap it back before you return the car.

I have a few suggestions and comments.

Wireless RF transmitters..... from my shops experence are poor in areas that have alot of RF transmissions. (ie. New York, Washington DC, Miami, etc.) Lots of static here in the Wash DC area.

Hard wired RF mods are better, but you need to find one preset station out of 5 to 7 offered on the RF mod that is free from broadcast.

I agree that using a aftermarket headunit is the better way to go. (ie with a direct hook up such as the Alpine CDA-9827, CDA-9831, CDA-9833 or CDA-9835 radio with an KCA-420i.

KCA-420i:

Lots of people have been looking forward to Alpine's KCA-420i iPod interface unit for the Ai-NET head units (which is to say, a nice way to hook up an iPod to your Alpine car stereo). Playlist Magazine got a hold of review unit and took it out for a spin, but I can't say I'm exactly happy with the results. They say it's the best iPod <-> car interface they've used, but it definitely seems that the KCA-420i unit was an afterthought. Alpine blames the wonky interface on head units not exactly designed to handle the thousands of songs that can exist in an iPod's catalog, but that's no excuse for the odd choices they made in some of the button-combination choices.

There's hope, though. Alpine plans on tweaking for the 2005 models. Perhaps they'll even make a head unit with enough oomph to handle the iPod as a proper input source.

Are some examples. The Sony radio listed above is also a nice choice and also looks good the the dash

You have plenty of choices but do some more research and good luck.

Regards,

What would everyone's suggestion be for a head unit that:

1. would allow me to hook up an iPod
2. is relatively cheap
3. I would be able to resell in about a year for a relatively small loss (on eBay probably)
4. coule be swapped in and out of the Crossfire with no modifications to the car

I'm just having a hard time rationalizing the purchase of a head unit for a car I will only have for 1 year. I have always wanted to hook my iPod up to my cars in the past, but have never had a Chrysler radio that made it easy.

Also, does the Crossfire use the same type of head unit slot (DIN or whatever they are) as other Chrysler products? That way, I could just switch it into my next car (hopefully).

Thanks for any info.

FerrariVdub:

My iPod is still mobile, I can remove it from the car and take it home or elsewhere, having a headunit with an AUX does not mean that you can't move your iPod around anymore.

Mexico, I know that it can be portable, I just dont want it to be limited to just my car, I would like to take it in my other cars, as well as my friends and girls car, somthing that can be mobile to hear it no matter what car I am in from a neon to a bentley. I am going to change my headunit in my car and that will solve the direct connect problem, but are not going to purchase it for a few months and in the meantime I want to hear all my songs and defintly want to bring them in every car I go and hear it.

Hey i just bought an itrip and I am really impressed. I guess the fact that back window is the antenna, makes it work well. Sounds really great, there is some hiss when there is no music playing, but when the music is on it sounds really good, not quite CD good, but radio good, I ran some classical through it, and the hiss was evident when there were single high pitched instruments such as a flute, but for 35 bucks, its a steal.

I too need to hook up my iPod to my new Crossfire. Here's what I'm going to try:

Edit - it's only $20.00!

Its good news that the iTrip works in the Crossfire, I've tried it in several cars and was not pleased at all with the results (that's my polite way of saying it sucked!).

I think for the long term I will install an FM Modulator like I did for my wife's Saab. Sound quality is almost CD like and there is no whine or hiss or white noise.

An FM "transmitter" is a wireless device that works by broadcasting your music/device/iPod at a certain frequency. Most "transmitters" have adjustable frequencies to allow you to pick the best one for your area. To install you simply plug it into a cigarette lighter and connect your device, set your radio to the frequency and hope for the best!

An FM "modulator" is a wired device that works by being connected in-line with your antenna. Good "modulators" actually disconnect your antenna to reduce interference. I installed one of these in my wife's Saab and the results were quite good. The sound quality was just shy of CD audio and the volume is slightly lees than CD's. To install in a Crossfire you'd have to purchase two antenna adapters (plus the FM Mod, obviously). The "modulator" usually has two RCA jacks as input for left and right channels.

Hope it helps.
Cheers!
