I reinstalled the factory unit and still hear no sound from the subs.. My friend is a big subwoofer fan, to the point of having custom units built for his SUV, and he reminded me that when I gave him a ride last Summer he had told me that the subs in my car should be adequate for my tastes. I did not even know they existed behind the seats since I had never moved the seats foreword.

It seems that regardless of how I hook up the wiring there is still no sound coming from the speakers behind the seat

I recommend losing the RCA jacks and getting the wire harness adapter.

Just remove the covers, and take a look at them, pull them out and test them. I bet you will see the surrounds are totally deteriorated. If so, $25 fix. I think there is 3 (maybe 4) 10mm nuts holding them in (after you remove some trim to get the carpet out of the way, maybe a T8 is needed as well?), then the wire connector. Plenty of info on this site on removal and refurb. If they look OK, the amplifier is under the carpet in front of the passenger side footwell, check if anyone has already altered the factory wiring. Also airbag components are there, don't touch those. And don't disconnect any air bag components with battery connected, (don't remove the seats) and don't reconnect the battery until all air bag wiring is reconnected, that should prevent any air bag light issues. Just a warning, you shouldn't have to touch any of it, but I could see someone removing the seat for easier access.

I have removed my seats several times with the battery connected, only wiring going to them is the seat motors and the heated seat elements .......

Oh, that's right, I was thinking of the seatbelt tensioners, and they wouldn't be removed. No seat sensors?

I managed to remove the grill from the speaker behind the seat and, I must admit that I have never before seen a speaker situated in that manor.

I did not see that the cones were deteriorated. I was under the impression that when a speaker blows, it will make an annoying sound. I have never heard that a blown speaker will emit no sound.

My friend said that when he heard my stereo last Summer, that he heard some bass and that maybe it was coming from the other speakers? If I can find his number, I will call the previous owner and ask if he knew of the subs not working.

Yep, they both point inward toward the back at a 45 deg angle.

Did the BigBangFor$ mod a few hours later.
Woweeee, those little subs are surprising , Sound is Cleaner Louder Better now.
I am glad i stayed with the stock Infinity amp , it sounds great.
the amp has a built in shark dsp that infinity set for our cars.
that dsp = great imaging .
i used Mundorf caps ,they really do sound better than cheap electrolytics.

I took the car to a guy that does electronic surveillance installations on fleet vehicles, stereo installs, etc. He put in a rap CD and had me touch the cone on the sub. Sure enough, they were vibrating! He also pointed out that all of the speakers are controlled through only two of the wiring harness's jacks so I am using only the center jacks!

My back must be particularly insensitive as I do not feel any vibration coming through my seats from the subs.

Sorry to waste everyones time!

I'm just starting to look for a stereo replacement, of course believing I could simply buy any current standard size. Apparently this isn't the case? I need a marine size?

you need a standard din size. the marine units are popular only because they (the Kenwoods ) are silver and match our cars better.
I have a kenwood marine unit and i dnot like it , the sound is Great true but the scrolling thru sources to find what you want is a pain .
but...ymmv

I have the Kenwood marine in both cars a d my only complaint is how hard it is to see the display in the daytime. I read somewhere that a new Kenwood marine being released this month solves that problem. You might check in with Crutchfield for more info. They are quite helpful.

My stereo only goes up to 35 since I installed it. That is not quite load enough while driving with the windows down.

Hearing aids are actually a lot more expensive than the excellent HU that made you deaf in the first place.

I had good hearing at age 48 when I got the first convertible. I attribute it to running around on interstates with the windows down - with or without the sound turned up. Those semi wheels are noisy as I roll by them!
