Re: Another silver faced head unit option
Was this pretty much a "plug and play" installation or do you need to add interior brackets and such? Those blue lights might look good in my Aero Blue roadster though. .I've not tried to install a car stereo for over 55 years. Wow.....I'm really getting old.

Re: Another silver faced head unit option
my xf is also aero blue and it compliments it nicely pretty much plug and play; also half the depth and weight of a standard deck since there is no cd mechanism.nothing special needed except for the aftermarket wiring harness.you're not old;just experienced!👍i've been in the car stereo gig for over 25 years;world champion in 2005.if you don't feel comfortable with the wiring if and when you get an aftermarket radio and harness if you want to mail it to me i will wire it up and solder it then mail it back to you..no charge.

Re: Another silver faced head unit option
This unit probably installs like the very similar Kenwood KMR-D562BT that I had at one time. CLICK
It is easy to wire up with the harness adapter as noted in the thread, the OEM radio has a different antenna socket to the Kenwood antenna so the an adaptor is required, if you are replacing the OEM navigation radio you do not need the adaptor as it is there already.
It matched the painted bezel and had a microphone for a hands free phone connection as well, well worth the extra 25 bucks or so.

Re: Another silver faced head unit option
Ok I'm going to show you how little I know about stereos but here it goes.....so this unit will play am/fm stereo, or by Bluetooth (files on my iphone), (which I currently have none) or it will play files from a usb flash drive? Is that correct?
The last stereo unit I installed was an 8 track player back in the 70's.

Re: Another silver faced head unit option
correct sir.you can also use your iphone/ipod through the aux option as well.all you need is a 3.5 mm headphone jack cord.wow!we are dating ourselves lol...i also had an 8 track player in my first car.
when i first started doing mobile audio competitively years ago my first system consisted of a Sherwood tape player,500 watt amp and two Marathon 12 inch subwoofers and fast forward to today: to 2 15 inch DC Audio subwoofers,20,000 watts,2 320 amp alts, and 10 batteries.

Re: Another silver faced head unit option
using 7 layer 3/4" veneer plywood, threw each panel on my shaper and put a lock miter on all corners, made center support, I could park a semi on the boxes, had everything sanded and painted, connections in the back run to 4 brass bolts on each box, each bokt is siliconed and sealed tight, for each voice coil, 14 awg from each terminal to copper lugs on each bolt then 12awg to lugs on the back, no flimsy box conectors. I have modified the boxes 3 times and can not get them to sound how I want, they still sounded better in the 1/2 plywood boxes.
my end result atm is .6528 cu ft and reccomended. 65 cu ft for sealed box, took the supports out, and still I can not get them to sound how I want, the vvx which is half the size 400 watts rms vs 800 watts rms sounded better, just wanted more, but need to stick with 8's and small space due to needing the luggage room every week. I started with the skar with the vvx 8v3 's and a mb quart 1200 x2 amp, like the skar I kept going with skar all around, but these zvx 's are driving me up the wall.
one of the best I have liked was the 4 audiobahn ultra excursion 12's and 2 power acoustic 2400 amps with glass fronts and dual blue meters on each, in the hatch of a 88 camaro, I had 2 different boxes that big box for shows and a smaller box for normal days with a much smaller setup, made it to take in and out. The audiobahn busted my front windshield, didn't think there was any chips or cracks in my windshield, but didn't think it was big enough to do that, but I could not sit in the seat and turn up the volume.
Mine
Kenwood kmr-d558bt
Skar tx65c components on factory amp
Skar tweeters on dash beside a pillars
Oem tweeters in door on factory amp
Skar skv2-1500.1 amp powering
lithium cell built and mounted by amp
2 Skar zvx 8 subwoofers in 2 seperate .6528 sealed boxes
Re: Another silver faced head unit option
usually 8's do great in .75 cu ft ported box,so I'd make a box 1.5 cu ft with one 4 inch aeroport. This is similar to what I'm building for my xf.I have a roadster so my box won't be quite that big.I've built one box for the xf for 2 8's with a Kicker 600 watt amp and it hits hard and clean. This way the box is optimum for performance without taking up too much space.

I have tried from a .78 with and without poly fill (I make baskets out of stiff fiberglass window screen and hot glue, so the poly fill does not have a chance of getting into the sub, and not having to glue sheets down) and with supports in box and without.
I always like the sound of sealed boxes better, and with space need to stick with sealed, I carry luggage every week, working away from home every week.
I can send you some pics in a text tomorrow.
be working 14 - 17 17 5 hours tonight.
