Default 1 khz tone from dash

Just started making a 1 khz tone today and can't figure out where it's coming from. It's very low volume and fades in and out every few seconds. Not very loud at all but is an irritation. Could turn the radio on and never hear it.

Just discovered a clue! It only happens when I push the air recirculation button on the dash. Don't know the operation of that but could it be some kind of a relay vibrating?

Yes it does stop with blower off and yes it could sound like a high pitched paper on comb. It's not that loud either. It's more like tinitis of the ear or a 1000 hz tone. (1 kz)

Most likely a door seal, good luck. Many a brave soul has ventured into the underdash AC/heating to never return.

It could also be a leaf or ? in the fan motor. They get in through the cowl in front of the windshield. Have you tried cleaning or replacing the filter under the glove box?

When I first got my car, about two months ago, I removed the cowling and removed a lot of leafs that were there and fan. Replace the cabin filter at the same time. Don't think the cabin filter had be changed since car was new. Think I'll drop the cabin filter just to see what "might" be in there.

Did some more troubleshooting testing of symptoms. I was initially wrong about when the tone happens. When the AC is on the tone comes and goes as well if the recirculation switch is on for not. It's definitely an electrical / electronic oscillation making the noise. I have to find a schematic of the electrical system to find out what it might possibly be. I'll check out the forum sticky's to see if it's available.

It may or may not be related but I removed the radio to install new one but have not done that yet. The tone started about the same time but did not associate that maybe they are related together. Gonna plug the radio in tomorrow and see if it has anything to do with the tone.

See the "Wiring" chapter of any of the services manuals in post 1:
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ollection.html
You will find an 04 Coupe manual and an 05 SRT (coupe and roadster) manual. They moved the fuses around in the underhood fuse box a bit (base cars and SE models in particular - use your owner's manual or the card under the lid of the fuse box and not necessarily the service manual charts to identify function of each fuse).

The first thing you will notice: The diagrams are somewhat incomplete and vague.
The second thing you will notice, after you get into it, is that there are numerous errors and omissions, but it's all we have.]

To my knowledge, there are two sources where an ACTUAL tone can be generated:
1) Thru the sound system's speakers (you'd know if it was coming from there)
2) The sounder-thingy in the instrument panel
Any other noise, it would seem, is coming from the fan motor, blower cage, the climate control "Actuator doors", etc.

New symptom clue discovered today. When fan switch is off I still "have" a tone. When fan switch is on low or high I "do not" have a tone. When AC is on I get a tone. (I better get that new radio installed so I can just "pump up the volume!") LoL

Problem solved! When I removed my radio I took it apart to see if I could get at the volume control to replace it. I removed the faceplate and discovered it had special screws which I had no way to remove. I put it back together and ordered new radio. Today I hooked up the original radio to see if it made any difference for the tone. The tone disappeared "and" there is no more problem with the volume control. Something must be interdependent with the radio removed to cause the tone. So I re-installed the radio and all is good "for now!" Thanks everyone for you help and suggestions.

Well it's solved but I don't know why it's solved.

"DARN TONE IS BACK!" Nadine and Christine says "hi!" The tone left for only a short time after re-installing the radio. The girls said leave update alone for a few days. It's gotta be AC related as it only tones when the AC is on. Yesterday no problem with only using the fan at any speed. Guess next step is to remove the console bezel and see what's back there that might be making that tone. "Seems" there must be some kind of relay or module back there to control the AC.

Took the car for a drive this morning and "nothing" except for one little tone and then no more! Intermittent tone comes and goes but nothing this morning!

You might post that video on Facebook here, the sound is not at all what I thought you were talking about.
Maybe someone here will say, "HEY, I dealt with that..... it's this................."

I drove several trips to and from for about 10 miles this evening and no tone. When it does happen it only last for about 4 seconds then stops. It's not consistant and is intermittant. Maybe I'll log onto a Mercedes SLK forum and see it anyone there has any info on my problem.

After several months the 1khz tone did not come back. No idea what was causing it but thank goodness it's not here anymore.
