Default Made a holder for my phone

Every time I drive the Crossfire I put my phone in the passenger seat or in my pocket. There isn’t a good place to set it unless you stick something to the windshield (don’t like that because it is a small windshield and most mounts are a bit bulky) or stick something to the dash (I don’t want stick anything on the dash). So I was driving the other day and found I could set the phone on the top edge of the shifter boot (6 speed 2004 NA) and the plug in the power outlet keeps it from sliding to the right, nothing prevents it from sliding to the left. I tried it for that day and it was fine as long as I didn’t accelerate too much or make a hard right.

So I thought that if I had something simple and slim that I could set the phone in that could grab on something to stabilize it all, that would be the ticket. I modeled a slotted carrier that uses the power plug (I always have a radar detector plugged in) and sits on the top edge of the shifter boot. I 3D printed it and found I needed to reduce the thickness of the section that the plug goes through. Here are some pictures of the first one. My phone is an iPhone X with a Quadlock case. It works pretty well and isn’t too obnoxious. Just an idea for those of you that have modeling software and access to a 3D printer, or you are a good whittler.

Just curious, Your design looks very professional. I noticed you even incorporated some surface texture. Do you use solid works to develop the model and then compile a routine that drives the 3D printer or is it done with a single modeling system? How long did it take to run the final printer cycle?

Jack, thanks. I’ve been designing semiconductor test hardware for quite a while, now retired and trying to keep the skill up. I used solidworks since 97 but can’t afford it for use at home. A few years ago I found an “app” called Shapr3D that enables solid modeling on the iPad. It’s no SW but it’s decent and they are continually improving it, like SW did in the early days. The texturing is an artifact of the printer, in some cases it looks kind of cool and in others it’s not desirable. I like how it looks on this part. There are a lot of parameters in the slicing software you can tweak to get better surface finishes but it’s usually a trade off between quality and time. Which brings me to your question of how long it took to print, this one was about 4 hours.

Cheers

Here’s Rev 2 with the reduced thickness on the section where the plug goes.

Is it possible you can post your stl file?

Mark,

Sure, I can do that. I should be able to do it later this afternoon.

I’m attempting to attach a couple files of the phone dock, hopefully it works.

One is the .3MF gcode file that my 3D printer reads, the other is a .STL file that most solid modeling programs should be able to import. Then you can modify it to fit your particular phone. As I mentioned earlier, this model is made to fit an iPhone X with a Quadlock case. No guarantees that this will work for you, I’m providing this as an experimental item to give a starting point to make your own Dock. In downloading and using this model you agree that I am not responsible or liable for anything regarding the manufacture or use of this phone dock. Use at your own risk.

Having said that, it’s just a phone dock and if you need such a thing it will be helpful to keep your phone in one place. Enjoy

edit: I uploaded the files but they seem to have disappeared. I see that they are not on the list of valid file extensions. Does anyone have any advice on how to get these files posted here?

edit: tried again and the 3MF file was rejected as invalid file type. The STL file remained but disappeared upon saving the edit.

I really like that phone holder you made and would like to buy one as I don't make models nor do I have a 3D printer.
Please send me a note at bill@brooksproperties.net if you would make one. Thanks, Bill.

Try Thingiverse to upload it and then make a link to it.
I will need to make it fit my Pixel 6 if I plan on using it.

Ok! The STL file is now available on Thingiverse.Com. Knock yerself out. Let me know how it works out and if you modified it to improve or for another phone type. I would also be interested to hear if someone mods it to fit an automatic.

After using this holder for while, I found that it helps to put a couple rubber bumpers on the back on each end. It helps stabilize it due to the raised spine on the dash. I used those stick on type from the hardware store.

I know this is a thread from 2023
If the one who created this 3D Mount sees this
I ask what phone you had that fit this Mount you made
i have an iPhone 15 now and wonder if it will fit in the mold you have provided the file for.

I am the guilty party! I had to go back and look it’s been so long. It was designed for an iPhone X, maybe in a case. If you go to the link there is a description with actual dimensions. After using for a while i found I would have made some changes to improve it. My car is in mothballs so I haven’t been motivated to do anything with it.

Thanks for the response here.
My friend has a 3D printer and uses it often for many things.
Please describe what changes you would have made.
I sent him the link from your post here and he has printed 2 of them for me.
He no longer has a Crossfire to put one on but he is sending them to me to try on my Roadster.
I will post here when I get one on my Roadster and follow up in this thread.

I was thinking I would add bumps to the back so you wouldn’t have to put the rubber feet on to stabilize it. Without them it would not sit flat due to the spine in the middle of the dash. But rubber feet worked fine if you get the right size.

Reading back in this thread I see that I made it to fit an iPhone X in a Quadlock case. Let me know if you need help tweaking the model to fit your phone, if your friend doesn’t have the software. Good luck.

My friend has printed 2 holders and sent me a photo of one with his Iphone 15 case sitting in it
I suspect it will work for me when it arrives

Awesome! I’m glad it’s going to be usable as is. Let me know how you like it in the car.

Americium have you ever considered designing a slightly longer or oversize frame that would accept an insert or spacer piece at one end that would hold specific phone sizes?
