Capital & Country Cruise
Capital & Country Cruise
How about a couple of nice little cruises in the National Capital Region? Our good Crossfire Forum friends from Pennsylvania – Ron & Jenny Singer – have joined the Ontario Crossfire group for two cruises through the Adirondacks and Catskills, with both runs ending with a spin around the track in Watkins Glen. Great fun for everyone.
Ron and Jenny are going to be visiting Ottawa on the weekend of our August 2nd – 5th civic holiday, so a Capital/Country Cruise is in order for the 3rd & 4th. One day of cruising the capital and one day of cruising the countryside. On the Sunday I’ll host a barbecue to finish off this little GTG.
What better way is there to spend a long weekend than good friends getting together to enjoy our cars and each other’s company! I can provide a list of some accommodation recommendations. Everyone is welcome - are you in?
OK – The Capital Country Cruise! Here’s a little more detail on the weekend. Ottawa is a great city with lots of nice places to go and things to see, so how about this: A cruise along the Driveway beside the historic Rideau Canal, along the Ottawa River Parkway on the banks of the Ottawa River, past Parliament Hill, to The Market for refreshments, along Sussex Drive past the Governor Generals’ and Prime Ministers’ residences, through Rockliffe Village, and anywhere else that we think is fitting. Let’s cap a relaxing day off with a nice dinner and entertainment by a local blues artist, Mr. Jeff Rogers. Sunday is the Country Cruise – with a little something for everyone. Let’s start with a nice breakfast at Richmond’s favourite - Bakers Bean. A leisurely cruise through Perth and down to Westport where we can take a break and visit a great little store just chock full of unique items. Then on to Newboro for a great lunch an another store with even more unique items. Suzanne just loves these places. From here we’ll back road it up to historic Merrickville on the banks of the Rideau River. More refreshments, and an entire village of little shops and things to see. From here we’ll head back to my place to finish off with a very informal barbecue. How do sausage dogs and chicken wings sound. You only need your refreshments, and maybe a folding chair.
Here are some accommodation suggestions, but a quick online search will get you everything that the area has to offer. Ron & Jenny Singer are already booked in at the Travellers Haven. I checked with them last week and they still had a few rooms left. But even if you’re not sure that you can make it or not, consider booking a room. You can always cancel beforehand.

Re: Capital & Country Cruise
Hey Mario - I knew that I could count on you. Those radios will come in handy for Suzanne's guided tour. She doesn't know about this part yet, but waaaaayyyy back in her university days she had a summer job as a tour guide and I figure that experience will come in handy. It will just be a matter of communicating to the individual cars.

Courtesy of the ingenuity of Mario (Turbomar), during the Sunday evening barbecue we will receive a demo of his home built turbine. You may have seen it on his youtube link, but believe me, there's nothing like the real thing! The weekend is shaping up to be a good one. It's been designed to actually be two separate cruises - one in town and one out. It includes fine dining with entertainment, a barbecue, and some great scenery and driving. It'd long weekend and everyone is welcome, but if you can't do two days, maybe one will work better. Feel free to take an abbreviated version. The more the merrier!

Re: Capital & Country Cruise
We're thinking of joining you for the country cruise. The stops you mention are all places I used to gig at years ago when I lived in Kingston. Haven't been up that way in a long time & it may be time for a trip down memory lane...as long as the lane has lots of bends in it

Hey Buck -
We'll be glad to have you. Tony & Gaia are musicians as well - you'll have more than Crossfires in common. I still have family in Kitchener, so we can talk old times that way, too. Send me an email to neverbetter@bell.net and I'll add you to the list as tentative for now, and you can let me know your plans. I'd recommend booking a room now - you can always cancel if necessary. Travellers may still have availability, but I'm not sure. Tony is staying at the Days Inn.
And yes, the roads are curvy.
