You can weed out the scammers by expressing interest, pretending to be naive, and ask about the car. When they reply, ask if they have the title in-hand and to send you a fax/scanned copy. When you start hearing their life stories about how they are getting divorced, in the army, transferring to Guam or whatever, and not answering your DIRECT question, you have scammer on your hands. Just keep asking the same questions. Pretty soon, you will hear crickets..... and get no replies.
Saw this original listing on cars.com and actually went back and forth with the guy just for kicks and giggles. First thing I told the guy was that I would prefer to do business over the phone, and that the number on the listing didnt work. His response was that he was deaf and would prefer email correspondence. I kept playing along just to see how things would go. By the end he indicated that he had a friend in the shipping business that owed him a favor and would ship it to me for free. Upon arrival, I would have 5 days to validate the condition and then remit the funds if I approved. Only catch, I would need to make a "deposit" into an escrow of his choosing. I told him I would simply drive and meet him within 8 hours with cash in hand, never heard back from him.....
