Default Model year clarification?

What is the cut-off/cut-in build date to the model year?

I always thought it was Oct 1 of the prior year.
Meaning that a car built between Oct 1 2005 to Sept 30 2006 would be a 2006, and so on.

Reason I ask is that I have seen conflicting info on this forum.

Anybody clear and certain about this issue, please respond.

~ no '03 models were ever built.

the crossfire was released/available in june '03 (usa) but considered an '04 production model year.

Therefore, the 10th digit in your VIN # should be 4 followed by X. ?
