1,000 miles in
Well, the odometer on my '05 limited coupe rolled over 1,000 on a cruise last night. With three young kids, parents with full time jobs, soccer, baseball, etc, it's taken me more than a month to make those first 1,000 miles. My reflections so far...
- I still stand and stare at the car from different angles when approaching it in a parking lot. This car looks great no matter where you look at it.
- Love down shifting into 2nd gear and powering through a 90 deg turn, puts a real stupid grin on my face.
- Approaching the car at night and hitting the key fob results in a slowly lit cabin which is fun to watch, more stupid grins.
- Still getting lots of attention as you roll down the road. Lots of other sporty cars which come up fast in the rear view mirror to check the car out.
- Love the understated growl of the engine with your foot on the floor. Great exhaust note.
- Really love the fact that although I have been driving this car for more than a month in West Michigan, I have only seen one other XF on the road. Meanwhile hundreds of Vettes, Miatas, Boxers, etc. Feels a bit more rare and exotic.
- I have noticed a bit of wind noise at the drivers side window. Found the TSB here on the site but haven't had a chance to get it fixed.
- 1st gear is still sticky, especially when the car is cold, but the tranny seems much smoother in general now (or I have adjusted to it).
- CD player skips quite a bit when the weather is cold and the car hasn't really warmed up yet. I have found this to be the case in all my vehicles though.
All and all, I absolutely love this car and have never once had a doubt about the purchase. Now that Daimler Benz has parted ways with Chrysler, these cars will become even more collectable IMHO. Getting ready to attempt my 1st oil change. I have found lots of advise on the site and answers to every question I have ever had or could possibly conceive of. This is a great little community.

Seriously on my 2004 the FSS light went on about every 12.5k miles, based on my driving. Why pollute and recycle perfectly good synth oil. The systems monitors the condition of the oil, it will tell you when to change it.

Some of us are old school and have to change our oil more frequently. Think of it like washing the car, it's our way to spend more quality time with it. Besides it only takes about 10 minutes to change and reset the FSS. Personally I drive the car hard so I change my oil every 5,000 and just before it goes into storage.

Rusty,
After two years and 42,000 miles I still feel the same way you do.
Re: oil changes. I have been hanging out at an MB Tech-only forum lately and I have found that the general consensus over there is that the FSS is not to be entirely trusted because leaving the oil in too long can cause long-term problems.
Here's a quote I found about the subject:

I know a couple people with higher miles '98 E320 cars with the 3.2 version, and it seems that ignoring the FSS is the key to making the M112 last. They use synthetic oil, and change it much more often than the FSS calls for. I would NOT buy a '98+ MB used car that was "serviced by the book." Much more frequent oil/filter changes are called for.

Thats right ...for me to poop on.
People on this forum have posted pictures of the oil filter after their 1st oil change. It had a lot of metal shavings. Dude, you are ignorant and an idiot.
What's the cleanliness of AMG's shop floor got to with the engines? AMGLover, you are just a poser. Like I said, do what you want. Its your car.

Re: 1,000 miles in
If you read the articles carefully, they conducted the study on a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with 10,000 miles on it.
What we are discussing here is a car with 1,000 miles on it. People who have changed their own oil around 1-2k miles have posted pictures of the metal shavings in the oil filter. This is a fact. That's why I said change the 1st oil change should be performed around 1-2k miles. As far as the 1st oil changes goes the article is irrelevant. After that point, you can go around 7k miles depending on the driving conditions (Crossfire Manual). The article suggests that you can extend the oil change intervals to 18,000 if you top up the oil frequently and change the oil filter every 5k. Personally, I will get the oil changed every 7k miles in my SRT6.

Too much crap in the oil (like metal shavings) will result in your oil filter getting partially blocked. That why oil filters are replaced too.
