Default Its not a mercedes (or even close)?

In my search for a spare tire I am trying to find out the diameter of the spare the SLK 320 uses.
I have found one on Ebay but the person doesn't know the diameter and won't research it for me.

I called a Mercedes dealership and they wouldn't admit it was equivalent to an SLK320 or help me in any way, they just kept repeating they didn't know what I was talking about!!!

I also spoke to service and they said they absolutely would never work on a Crossfire, stating it has no Mercedes parts, I stated i didn't want warranty work and would pay still no dice.

It was bizarre, like it was some big government secret they couldn't talk about.

Has anyone else encountered this and does anyone know for sure if it fits, there has never been a definitive answer but its come up many times.

Why don't you search one of the MB forums - there's probably the data there you need - if not, ask!!!

with the recent sell off of chrysler there are plenty of mercedes employees that are relieved to be rid of the lower prestige brand association ... therefore be prepared for plenty of stubborn mercedes employees that will never admit any connection between the R170 association the crossfire carries...

You get the same attitude from BMW dealers when asked about the Mini...I do my own work...screw em.

Same thing happened with my 914 when I talked to a VW mechanic for some engine work. He said it wasn't the same engine...ok cause someone else produced a VW Type-4 engine and Porsche sold it...right. I know there are some P-car parts, but even a simple evaluation of what's wrong with the car could help me in some direction.

I'd take it to a Independent MBZ mechanic, better service rate and you probably won't pay service center prices.

If you are willing to pay, take it to a independent garage that specializes in MB. They are not to proud.

I also spoke to a independent BMW/merc mechanic that my buddy takes his 740il to and he didn't want any part of it either.

Said the "computers" were different and he didn't see enough of a market to invest in the tools for it.

Man, you're really in the SOL. Start praying.

Seriously, Check with other shops, I'm sure there are some out there that can help you. I spoke to a local one here, and he's got no issues working on these cars. He new all about the car.

I am interested in buying the spare you post the link for here.
Any concrete evidence it will work?

I'm not concerned about the space issue as I am alone 9 in 10 times I am in the Xfire with no luggage to speak of.

I can't tell you for sure, but it seems to me that it should work. Keep in mind it's just for emergencies, so the risk is low. Worse case scenario if it does not work, you can sell it. It's not a major investment. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate.

Themush1326, Motor Trend magazine did a comparison test of the '04 Crossfire vs an '03 Mercedes SLK320 in their December '03 issue.
With identical drivetrains, automatic trannys, 3:27 gear ratios, hub assemblies, etc. they both were turning 2,250 RPM at 60 MPH. So that means that even though the SLK had 16" wheels, and the Crossfire uses 19" in the rear, they must be the same diameter, so the SLK spare should work out just fine on the Crossfire.

If you get a 16" spare, you'll need to make sure it will fit over the Crossfire's brakes. I know the SRT has bigger rotors than what the SLK32 has.

thanks for the replies, the brakes are the same on the slk320 so I'm confident it will work.

Yeah, Mercedes of Austin told me the same thing "They are totally different cars, and we only work on Mercedes" They’re either ignorant, incompetent, or just plain jerks. Needless to say, I will never buy or service a car there. Horrible dealership.
