Well I'm @ work so I need to keep this short, BUT I'm looking for a new set of tires since my Michelins handle terrible and are getting worn (32,000 mi.). Any recommendations...?

It seems like the conti cw95's handled well in the ran and generally all around, but I guess they are discontinued now...

I tried a quick search and saw a recommendation for Goodyear tire?

BTW, I have a 130 mile commute everyday during the week so I need to consider tire wear, rain traction, and maybe snow traction as well... I like to drive fairly aggressively on the weekends as well so it should handle well too.

jputzeh, i'm in the same boat as you. A few tires i'm considering are Bridgestone Potenza RE 050, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3, and Continental ContiSportContact 2. All are summer tires with the very best handling. Check out Tirerack.com and read up on these and others to find a tire that will meet you needs.

 

If any of you guys are located near SE Michigan, I'll buy your worn-out tires with no plugs or patches.

 

I have heard good things about the Goodyear tires as well - in your search you probably came across my post about tires, too. I have been pricing them and they are pretty decent, not to mention I asked some of my car-nerd friends and they claim they handle very well too. I will need tires for rain/snow/FUN and these are what I plan to get.

 

if you even think that you may need to drive in the snow you should avoid any of the summer tires including the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, Continental ContiSportContact 2, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A, etc. none of these tires were designed to drive in any degree of snow or ice. if you want to be able to drive in even limited frozen precipitation, opt for something like Continental ContiTouringContact CW95, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, or Yokohama ADVAN S.4.

 

if you want proper performance tires... there is little to think about...

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 is the clear winner being priced so much better than many other tires they outperform.. than only tire I could think of that is about equal to them is the Michelins, but they cost a lot more...

Besides Goodyears look the best...

 

I have the GS-D3s on my daily driver for over two years now. They're excellent tires. Phenomenal grip in the wet and excellent resistance to hydroplaning (even on my wrong-wheel-drive pos), the dry grip is very good as well. Most of the tires with aggressive thread patterns tend to be loud (especially as they wear) but these have remained quiet and they're about halfway to the wear bars. I don't think they're "touring tire" quiet, but they're quiet for a high performance tire.
Don't even think about driving in snow or much less ice though. I already tried and it was the most terrifying drive home i've ever had, although i did manage to avoid hitting anything or anyone.
Lastly, i don't know if this holds true across the entire GS-D3 size range but my tires are a bit wider than the Dunlop's they replaced even though they're the same size.

btw don't buy Dunlop's, they suck! at least their performance tires do.

 

I absolutely love my Yokohama Advan S.4's. They are a very good handling tire, much quieter than my original Conti's and softer ride. They are not an extreme performance tire but for all around performance, I love them. They have a longer tread life as well as many out there so with the mileage you drive, you may want to seriously weigh them against other options.

Well back from work... Thanks all for the replies. The CW95 Conti's are discontinued and the Michelins are just too pricey. I'll choose b/w the yokohamas or the Goodyears...

 

I just got the Yokohama Advan S4's. Just about 500 miles mostly dry with a little bit of rain. So far they are very good. My old Michelin PS2 were great too, but I need a snow tire as well. Check out Tire Racks reviews on tires. They rate the Advans real high.

10/19/07. Now it's over 1000 miles in rain and dry conditions, and after having the exhilaration of taking an exit ramp a wee bit too fast. These tires are just fine. I see no difference in handling between them and the Michelin's (Which is pretty great). The real test will be what I say after winter. By the way, when you consider the cost, Consumer Reports' ratings aren't too swift. But they don't seem to like much of anything so I don't take them seriously.

 

I have about a thousand miles on the Advans, too. I think they're a tad noisier than the contis, but not bad, and the performance wet/dry is worth that - so far, so good!

 

I had Michelin Pilot Sport All Seasons on and they were great, I just got Yokohama Advans installed today... 245/35R18s and 295/30R19s.

I'm kinda bummed, because it looks like I could have fit 255/35R18s and 305/30R19s on there. Oh well ...

I'll have to drive them for a bit to give a proper review... look for the thread with pictures of the new tires soon. (Need to wash the car).

 

I have the BCGoodrich G-Forces (flame tred style) on the backs and conti contacts on the front but im getting the front ones replaced to match the back because every conti I get is out of round.

 

Alright... went with the Advan S4 tires. Got them installed saturday morning and have put about 200 miles on them so far.

I'm pretty sure they are a little louder than the OE Michelins that I had previously.

Handling doesn't feel as precise with the Advans as it did with the Michelins (the XF is very a precise handling car). I'm sort of holding back on that last comment though because I expect they will break in after a few hundred more miles.

Haven't hit any rain/wet roads yet.

I like the look too... I'll post some pictures in my gallery (if anyone cares).

 

i went with the toyo proxes 4 tires. they are medium softness, and have excellent grip and an awesome tread pattern, and their reasonably priced.
