Default Engine sludge? Dirty Exhaust Tips

When detaling my car I always clean my exhaust tips with Eagle One's chrome polish. However after just a few days of driving there is always a hazy gray film on the tips. It looks as if it has dripped out of the exhaust and dried. I know these cars have commonly dirty tail pipes (when I bought mine used they were black with sludge). However it bothers me having to wipe out the exhaust two days after I cleaned them.

Does anyone else have this problem, where the sludge in the exhaust occurs frequently? My one thought is that I might need to change the fuel filter?

All input is appreciated!

Since we going into winter and the temperatures are a little cooler I'm sure its just the condensation mixing with the existing exhaust carbon and dripping out until the exhaust warms up and dries out.

Go to this link RPM put this up a while back and I have been trying to stay with it fairly close, mostly Shell. When you open link at bottom it says retailers, it will list stations. It has seemed to help on our exhaust tips a bunch. http://www.toptiergas.com/

Mine were dirty when I got it. I just used a Brillo pad and a little metal polish. I wash them when I wash the car and they stay clean.

I switched to Chevron and noticed a significant decrease in the amount of deposit left on the exhaust pipe. You may want to try this.

Top Tier gas makes a big difference, there is never any exhaust buildup/blackening. I only use Shell 93, Sunoco 93 (94 when I can find it) and Citgo 93 as my last choice.

I agree. Only Shell and Chevron for my Crossfire.

I've always used Shell or Sunoco in my tank and my tips are always a little black between washings and I usually wash my car once a week. Now I'm wondering if I have a problem also if everyones are clean between washings.

Pat,
Our tips are a little dirty, but not like they were when running lower grade gas.

Wait wait wait....BP is not on the list? All I ever fill with is BP premium assuming they have high quality gas. Well I'm an idiot. I honestly always thought BP was top and Shell and all of them were crappy, shows what I know. My Exhaust tips usually get dirty pretty quickly though.

I use BP exclusively and no other gas ever.
Isn't BP in the Chevron family ??

I had an MBA professor who was an Atlantic/Richfield (now ARCO) executive.

I learned that all refineries - no matter who owns it - sell their refined gasoline to a pipeline company who pumps it and stores it at a "Feed Tank Farm" strategically located in certain markets. Basically a cocktail of all the gasoline it buys.

They then pump and sell this cocktail of gas to "jobbers" for retail sales at a place called the "rack" - these are the trucks you see pull into the gas station to deliver the fuel. The delivery trucks (Jobbers) that service stations in your area all come from the same terminal or "rack" - over and over again. It's too expensive to do it any other way unless you live close by a refinery that direct delivers to its stations.

Only the additives are different or the gas station may "blend" on its own or has leaky tanks.

Thanks for all the input, its good to know its most likely not just my car. I feel too the cold weather has something to do with it, however in the summer I would sometimes get dirty looking film despite the warm weather. My thought now, like most of you, is that its the quality of gas? I will try to a toptiergas station and see if the results change.

It can be frustrating because people look at the car and are like wow nice car, and then they look down and see those dirty exhaust pipes which I have just cleaned days ago!
