Jim I don't know exactly when they started, I'm thinking after 1971, but you could get a 360 2bbl, (it came as the base engine) and later they were even offered with 304's.
Some even came with steel, non-functional cowl induction hoods.

Mine came from AMC as a Javelin 304 auto on the column.

It was converted to an AMX in someone's backyard.

It got a 360 (from a Jeep Wagoneer) with 2bbl, and a 4-speed on the floor. The car still had the oem steering column with the shifter sleeve.

The interior was the black with prism AMX interior. It had the front and rear AMX spoilers, non-functional cowl-induction hood, and the exhaust was ran from headers to straight pipe exiting the sides in front of each rear wheel. It had a nasty blue paint job with no shine left at all. I sold it for $1500 before I turned 18. I'd LOVE to have it back now.

Jim, I checked a 71 brochure, and the 360 2bbl was the standard Javelin AMX motor.
Then I checked a 1974 brochure, and the 304 was the standard Javelin AMX motor.

Maybe your "Halfhymers" is effecting you eyes. Or maybe ya just need your reading glasses.
