Default Headliner is falling

I need a new headliner. The one that is currently in the car is falling down in almost every area. Almost like the glue gave way all at once. I called the dealer and got some crazy price that is just ridiculous. So what are my options?

Thanks

Whatever you do decide to do, please don't trash whats in there right now. Best advice I can give you is if it's out of warranty, drop the headliner and rewrap it yourself. It might look crazy hard but there arent' any seams or funky compound curves to deal with. Best way to do it after you get your headliner out (instructions here) you can just pull slowly and it will come off. Some with the foam, some without. Doesn't matter as the foam will bet replaced anyways. After you get it off, take a green and yellow dish cleaning sponge, I forget the brand but they come in two packs and you cant' miss them, and just scrub the foam off the top. you don't need to get it perfect, just get it so it is flat. you're gonna be spraying it with carpet adhesive that you can buy at most auto stores and whatever headliner fabric you decide on. Now's a good time to do that suede or crushed velvet headliner you wanted as a kid...K so not a good time but whatever LOL. Take the fabric you buy and lay it on top of the headliner. NO ADHESIVE YET!!! lay it down and mark your centers. that is the only alignment you'll really need and you only need thsi if it is textured. Now, take the new headliner, lay it flat with the foam up and spray the livign crap out of it with adhesive. lay it on as haphasardly as possible but make sure to get good coverage. DO NOT SRAY IT LIKE YOU ARE PAINTING SOMETHING!!! now take the headliner and do the same thing to it. make sure you get it good around the back edge of the quarter windows as you will be rolling the fabric over that since there is no molding that coveres it liek the rest. Now, take your center marks and line them up, running your hand down the center spine and working your way outward as evenly as possible. You dont' want to realyl stretch the fabrick at this point. when you get to the corners, kind of scrunch it up if you know what i mean and push it eenly into the corners. This is the most important part though as if it's stretched too much, eventually it will pull out. after you have it all done, take bags of sand or any other heavy but pliable thing. bags of lead shot work great but most people dont' ahve them around the house. LEt it sit at least 2 hours. the longer the better here. I'd let it sit over night btu that's just me. I tend to err on the side of caution. Now you want to trim everything. Be extremely carful. Most of the time, you can fold it back and leave a little excess. I'd recomment doign this everywhere. You can allways take away btu you can't add it back. Now put it back in your car and marvel at your handywork. Oh, also, before puttign it in your car, if you have landscapign plastic, wrap it with that or some really big trashbags, you dont' want to rip the fabric off as you slide it back into the car.

Hope this helps you out if it's not a warrany repair.

take it to an upholstery shop if you don't wanna do it your self. have them re attach it (this way if a glue stains, u can have them replace it), or go crazy and do suede or something. hahha

That's what I did when the headliner started to fall in my AMX (after 25 years). The shop re-glued it, and it held for about 24 hours. Fortunately, I found a "fiberglass" reproduction headliner, and I had that installed and there was no more problems.
Since adhesive technology seems to be going backwards, (at least in Germany) maybe some interprising individual will eventually make a fiberglass mold of the current Crossfire headliner (from a salvage vehicle perhaps) and reproduce it for the rest of us. Because it looks as thought we will "all" eventually need it.

Or the Crossfire Forums resident "Barrister" (that we have on retainer) could add that to his list of "Class action law suits" that he plans on filing against Chrysler on our behalf. For:
1. Door Rust
2. SRT6 Rear Wing "bracket" rust
3. Bucket Seat "Heating Elements"
4. Roadster's rear Window coming loose
5. Coupe's Headliner falling

If it evers happens to me, I think a leather covering would be awesome.

haha true i thought of them just regluing it and falling off again. i think the easiest way is to rip out the old material, remove that yellow sponge thats the culprit to all this, then just glue on a new without the sponge.

it's funny, this world has spacecrafts, cars that park them self, more than a century of building cars, yet the headliners still fall off. hahahah

Unhappy Re: Headliner is falling

It's not a matter if it happens to me it's when it's going to happen. We all have the same foam backed material and adhesvie. It's going to fail.My car is a garaged '05 SRT with 3500 miles on it and the headliner is coming loose. This is premature failure!

I had the same problem with mine, but it hapened while my car was in the body shop, so the shop owner helped me out a bit. I'va always disliked the beige part of the interior, so I took the opertunity to have my headliner wraped in black suede along with the A-pillers, and dyed the rear plastics in black. I was going for the "luxury" look you find in most of the AMG Mercedes. I think it looks much better, and supprisingly, didn't make the interior feel smaller. Since the material is black suede, you don't really notice it as much as the lighter beige. So now my car is truely black-on-black.

sounds like the perfect time to wrap it with something that actually matches the interior. I have wanted to do this since day one but other ideas keep getting in the way. LOL

I suppose this is why they don't hold their value so well?

OK RX7TT, don't get me started.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Of the problem areas I mentioned, most people shopping for a Crossfire don't even know about.
The door rust problem is really easy to fix, or prevent from happening in the first place.
Seat warmers almost always fail while the car is still under warranty.
Headliner falling, and Roadster rear window detachment problems seem to occure more often in the warmer climates.
Every car built usually has it's own problem areas, and the Crossfire is no different.
As far as I know, there haven't been any engine recalls.
And fuel milage is actually pretty good, especially when you consider the performance it offers.

To be fair, Mazda did replace all 04 and early 05 engines with a recall, whether they were blown or not.

And it's nothing at all against the Crossfire, of course. I still want one
