Let's talk Oil Changes
So I'm about to do my second oil change since owning my Xfire. (It's an '04 and has 40K...I just bought it a few months ago).
anyway...First time i went to dealership to get it done it cost roughly $120. now they are telling me it's $150. (using the recommended 0W-40) Yikes.
i don't mind paying it but I'm debating doing the work myself. Has anyone changed the oil + filter on thiers? any advice? Procedures? Tips?

Easy as pie. Some people use "topsider" pumps to pull the oil out without getting under the car, others do it the old-fashioned way. Either way, it's relatively easy if you've done any normal oil change before.
Please search for "oil change" to find additional information.

Nice and simple. I personally hate to change oil but after looking at the prices to have it changed I decided to do it myself. Of course, I did buy the topsider and it is a breeze.
I would recommand to change the oil yourself (If you are the kind of person)
First of all the crossfire is much easier than most other cars since the oil filter to right at the top, instead of under the engine at a weird angle like others.
Second, you can inspect your car while changing oil, you don't offen see under the car (if you drain the oil)
Third, save $, you can check the forum what kind of oil and filter you wil need.
Last but most important, it depends on your luck when you bring it to a shop to change oil. If a messy guy works on your car, than good luck. Some spilt oil all over, some forgot to attach the plastic cover, some put regular oil to your crossfire, some over tight the drain plug.....

Thanks all. I think I will buy the pump then. I did some research after reading some of the threads and I think I will be able to save $60-$70 each time (not the first time though since i have to buy the pump but I will break even).

What is the K&N part number for the fleece ones?
What a fantastic thread to stumble across. I just paid $118 to have my oil changed! I'm definately going to look into the topsider thing, I've never even heard of that.
Any suggestions on where to buy the oil? Should I hop down to my local Auto Zone, or has someone found a real bargain somewhere else? And since I've never done this before, where can I check about disposing of the oil properly?

I found Wally World has decent prices on Mobil One 0w-40wt when they have it in stock. Filter I buy from Auto Zone, then I pay my local Valvoline Oil Service guys to change it out. That way I have no oil disposal to worry about. I understand that most Wal Marts and Auto Zones accept waste oil in most cases.

Thats a new one to me! Well that is if you purchase the oil from an AutoZone, Advanced Auto, or Pepboys and do it yourself. Jiffy Lube, WallsMart etc, charge the disposal fee when they change the oil for you.
I just got mine changed at a local Pepboys (no time to do it myself) it ended up costing me $105 for the oil change and that was only roughly $20 for the service. I was also out there the whole time they were working on it, to make sure they didn't f anything up. They had the purolator filter in stock so I went with that. My only issue is that the damn tech didnt know how to drive a stick very well... arg.

I buy my oil on sale at Pep Boys and get the filter from Auto Zone or NAPA and a Goodyear store changes them for $17.00.
I've never added it all up but it's around $50.00 , and I do watch them change it!
I may go away from 0-40 but have only used Mobil 1, 0-40 for the last year or so.

People seem impressed with a top pump for changing their oil not realizing that doing it like this you fail to drain the metallic particles in the bottom of the oil pan. This pump system became popular in the late 1930's to sell more oil at the pump block while you bought gas. Do it yourself and let the warm oil drain for an hour from the pan. If you are fanatic about cleansing your engine you can next mix a 1/2 oil and 1/2 kerosene mixture.......run the motor at idle and lightly rev it several times for about 15 mins....... re drain as above, and ad new filter and proper oil. Like I said, if you are fanatic. Good luck, Tomygun
