Default So, this fell out when the door was opened...

A friend and I were leaving the local Chinese restaurant this evening but when he opened the passenger door, we heard a big clank! We both looked at each other and he picked up a weird looking black metal piece from the ground. So what is this thing? Why did it fall out? Thanks!

It's just a cover at the top of the door, (inspection cover?) that is held in place by a couple of star head screws. The screws probably just came loose that's all.

Great! No big deal then. Wonder what caused it to loosen? I've noticed lately that if someone closes the door a little hard, you can hear like a metal clanking noise-- probably this thing slamming against the body...

Two baby phillips screws somehow backed their way out and the piece fell off.

Use a Torx screwdriver #9, not a Phillips unless you use a Phillips screw. These screws mess up real good if you use the wrong driver.

No joke. These are the ones that are just a little bit smaller than all the rest in the door right? I tore mine up good, just didn't have a driver that small. Anyone know where to get replacements?

Look them up on the parts list in the factory service manual and then order them online from Boltdepot.com

OR go to the dealer...

Huh, the one base Crossfire I worked on had little phillips screws in it............must have changed them out. I know M-B uses torx on almost all of their cars and Chrysler usually puts cheap azz phillips instead.
