Default Check Engine Lite

Hi,

I have had my "Check Engine Light" going on and off for over a year. I finally took it to the dealer and had a talk with them about it.

They said that it really didn't mean anything, and that everything was really OK with my car. Well....if I ever wanted to sell it, I would think it would be hard to explain that to the new buyer.

So I had them replace the parts that were causing this “Not a problem”. They replaced the Air Pump which was covered under my extended warranty with the $100.00 deduct able, and the Relay that was $342.00 that was NOT covered under the extended warranty.

Even though the extended warranty seems to have 100’s of parts listed that it covers, some are not covered.

So, hopefully my car will not show the Check Engine Light ever again. And I can stop taking off the gas cap, thinking it’s not on right!

Most of the time the hose just pops off the back of the air pump.
(sorry, but it is a very common issue)

My Check Engine Light came on last week, just had the Air Pump replaced yesterday. Just a heads up- the Service Manager said if the check engine light comes on (steady light) and you have no driving issues, its usually not a big deal - sensor, gas cap, air pump. If you have a flashing check engine light and problems driving - get it in its more serious.

My light has been on for days with no driving issues. Where is the air pump?

Yeah yeah, I'm just to lazy to look for it myself.

Mine came on yesterday, 45k miles, 2004 auto hardtop, runs like a champ, solid light. So where's the air pump? It should have a pulley on it right? what's the best angle to get to the back of the air pump (underneath car, from above engine bay?). Also, does the big engine cover have to come off? Thanks.

It is good to check hoses and vacum lines, but please don't start replacing parts without reading the codes. Autozone will do this for free as well as clear the codes. I used to do this until I bought an OBDII scanner. these don't cost much and you can read and clear codes which turns off the check engine light. It is very easy to use. Just plug it in turn the key to the on position and it will do the rest. Once it displays the codes, write them down and then clear them. Once you have the codes you can also just google it and find solutions. I just did this last weekend with my daughters Jetta. Alot of the codes are easy as they will just tell you which sensor is bad. Others can be a little more trick like misfire. there are multiple things that can cause this.

I was going through some threads regarding the check engine light and saw all the suggestions to go to Autozone, which I'm going to do this weekend. I don't think it's going to be something serious, the car sounds/feels healthy. I don't know if this is related, but my tire pressure light came on the other day and went away later in the day. I don't know if a bad tire pressure sensor could cause the check engine light to come on. However, I'll know what caused the light to go on soon enough. Thanks.

Tire pressure light will not cause check engine light to come on.

I've had the check engine light on/off since the day I bought mine a year and a half ago. I took it in the week after I bought it and... *digs up the paperwork*

Concern: Customer states ck eng light on

Cause: scanned car found code po410 sec air pump fault pulled diag tree found air pump solinoid to have internal short

Correction: replaced secondary air pump solinoid

Needless to say again the light has been coming off and of every since. It comes on about 3 trips out of my 18 or so drives a week on average.

To be honest I've never had a single problem with my car since owning it and I kind of grew numb to the light though it does bother me from time to time. My warranty with the dealership I bought it from runs out in 6 months so I might take it in within the next two weeks to get my money's worth. I'll try to post the results of that trip on the same issue if it can be of help.

Last time I took it in the check engine light came on when I drove away from the dealership.
