Default Cruise Control problem

So I was driving up to Sacramento last night and went to turn my cruise control on and set it to 70 but it wouldnt stay. It felt like it ingaged but didnt hold. So when I was on my way home I figured Id try it on a street through town. It worked fine at 40mph, so I thought maybe turning off my car had fixed the problem. I got back on the freeway and tried setting it to 70 again with no luck. So I slowed down to see if it would set at lower speeds, and it did. It will not set on anything over 60 mph.
I read some posts on here this morning. I checked the #10 fuse and its fine. Last night i discounted the battery and let it sit for awhile and still its not working.
So, anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

I find the MB cruise control to be one of the most unreliable on the market.

That said, if it tries to hold but won't, it is likely in the speed sensor.
Does your speedometer needle flicker at those speeds?
It or the wiring may just be loose.

I never had a Benz that this feature was reliable after 5 or 6 years.

If it allows you to set it at speeds under 60, can you set it and then push the stalk up to increase speed? When you release, does it hold the new higher speed?

Have you ever used it since you installed the sprint booster?

Yeah it has always worked up untill the other day. I disconnected the battery again to see if it would do anything, but no luck. I guess I will have to take it in to get it looked at.

I just had new tires installed today in a different size and now I have no cruise control, exact same symptoms as above, seems to work at 35-39mph though.

Noticed last week that I'm also having problems. Mine will intermittently hold speed then disengage. Sometimes it will kick back in if I repeatedly flick the stalk but mostly it won't reengage.

Mine has never engaged since purchase with 49,000 miles on it. I don't know why I never mentioned it on the forum before. It can be an annoyance for those long drives. I will be following this thread.

Strange as it may sound, my wifes SSB had a tail lite go out. I got a replacement from the dealership and replaced. Then, the cruise control worked until....... the headlights were put on. At that time, the burnt out light indicator would lite up and the cruise stopped working. If you turned off the car and didn't turn on the lights, cruise would again work. Come to find out, the dealer gve me a tail light that was only 1 filiment when I needed a double. The driving lights when turned on, would then indicate a failed light, and this caused the cruise to not function. After going to Pepboys and getting a correct tail lite, the problem was solved.

Sounds strange but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

If anyone questions you about this cars orgins, just tell them this story and it will prove that it is a German sports car.

Some people can't stand when thing like this happen, but overall I do not mind too much. It gives the car a personality.

Check your tire pressure - did you change your tire size lately?

the cruise controll is connected to the brake lamp switch. if the switch is shorting out ot about to die, the cruise will not work. my switch went out and i had no CC. check the switch, quick and cheap fix.

Can a faulty Brake Switch cause the Cruise Control not to work even though the brake lights appear to be working correctly.
I have this problem with no error dash light issues either. There has been no change of tire sizes and no other issues that I am aware of, just no Cruise Control.
I realize this is a very old thread, but it seemed the most relevant.

Just in case, there is a fuse in the underhood fuse box: fuse #10, 5 Amp, Beige, Speed Control

See page 231 of user manual.

Post #16 states the cruise control is connected in some fashion with the brake light switch. We have had several members, including myself, who's wings would deploy and the BAS/ESP light on the instrument panel would light. Even though both brake and tail lights where working properly, replacing the brake light switch solved the problem.
