Default Brake Dust and Exhaust Dust

Why do I have to clean my rims every two weeks from break dust?

How do i get the black off my exhaust tips?

Why? because brake dust is a B!tch. Two Words: Rotex Gold. That'll eliminate 97% of the brake dust issue. Until the time for a break job comes it'll be the same routine of a wipe down of the rims after every drive. Thats what I do until its time for new brakes. I think most members on here will agree they are awesome.

Change your brake pads to Rotex Golds available at Brakeworld.com
Do it yourself Install instructions

Clean you exhaust tips with Nevr-Dull available at most auto stores and Walmart.

Either you guys brake really hard all the time, or our definition of lots of brake dust is drastically different. It's been just over three weeks since I last washed the rims and they're just now becoming nasty (I'm washing it this weekend).

Paint the inside tips black, then your cleaning is cut in half!

I have used Akebono ceramics in the past and they have less brake dust than my Axxis Ultimates. Either way they have less dust than the OEM replacements the dealer installed. Better braking with my Axxis pads and they would both squeek first thing in the morning. The Akebono pads have less dust and are also less grabby in cold or wet weather conditions.Crossfire.jpg

But it looks awesome when you look at your tailpipes and their shiny inside.

I second the never dull, it's a lot of work the first time, but it's easier to maintain.

I switched my pads to Rotex Gold. Really cut down on dust and I have no noise at all. I need to add a note of caution here ; I'm really hard of hearing especially with the radio on.

If you put the Rotex Gold Pads on... should you do all four at the same time????

I don't need pads right now, but I am so sick of the break dust....

I only had 12000 milea on the OEM pads. I changed all four BUT I suspect that just changing the fronts will eliminate the dust on the wheels. My back wheels did not seem to have as bad a problem with dust as the front ones.

I hope someone with more professional experience will answer the question of whether you need to replace all pads at the same time. I will stop this PM at my mechanic for his thoughts on this.

No, not necessary. You can wait to replace the rear pads until they warrant replacement due to wear. The vast majority of your braking is done by the front brakes and they can wear several times faster. They also create lots more heat which I think contributes to why there is only noticeable brake dust on the front wheels. The brake pad is made of a friction material (metal, ceramic, etc.) and a binding agent that holds it together. I'm going to guess that it's actually the "melted" or vaporized binding agent that sticks to the front wheels and attracts the dust from the friction material. Otherwise, I'm not sure if the expended friction material would stick. On the rear wheels, the heat build up is so much less that maybe neither the used up binder or friction material can stick to the wheel. When cleaning my rear wheels I've never even noticed a film of dust on them.

I hate to say it, but with EVERY crossfire I have ever seen, with normal, hell, even old lady driving, after 3 weeks the wheels would be absolutely embarrassing.

Anyone else?

As so many are claiming to break dust, I decided to experiment doing this myself. I used an old Celestron microscope and a surgical razor blade and try as I might..... I am still unable to replicate this. I am able to separate clumps of dust into smaller clumps of dust, but much to my chagrin... I cannot break dust. Maybe a tutorial is in order from someone that has successfully done this.

Definately. Whenever I see an XF with clean front rims I do a double take...It almost doesnt look right!

Mercedes and BMW are notorious for OEM pads that emit a ton of dust. Just look at most of them driving down the road and you'll notice the front wheels look darker than the rears most of the time - except for that one E Class I saw the other day with clean fronts and nasty dirty rear wheels. Obviously just rotated the tires!

I swapped out all four corners to Posi-Quiet ceramic pads with 2500 miles on the car because I couldn't stand the brake dust build up. Now - virtually zero dust, not a squeak since install and braking power is still awesome.

I installed Rotex Gold pads about 10,000 miles ago. I installed both the front and the back with new rotors as well. When I first got it it wasn't making any noise at all. I'd say about 7,000 miles into it (when the weather changed) , it started to make horrible squealing sounds but that was eliminated once car was washed but not for long. Now with 10,000 miles there is no squeal even if I havn't washed my car in a while. So I'm a happy camper now!

I had my XF a month when I decided I couldn't live with the brake dust. Pads had 80% of their life left, but who cares. Rotex Gold is my savior.

For polishing exhaust tips, get a Mother's power ball (mini). Chuck it in a drill, rub on some never dull and presto, instant clean pipes.
