Default opinions on hid headlight/fog combos

im going to be installing 8000k HID's for my headlights and have no clue what to do about the fogs. i dont want to spend the money for another HID for those, but was unsure what type, color, and blablabla would go with my hid's as i think it's going to look funky. any suggestions?
thanks!!!

What kinda kit are u lookin to go with? I'm pretty much in the same boat. I may fork over extra and go with maybe a 6000k fog kit also.

I have both 6000k headlight and fog light and I love the look! Their awesome and light up everything in the road!

I got it from DDM Tuning - HID Kits, DEPO Lights, BMW & Porsche Lighting & Bumpers

Ordered both from there and they have great prices as well as customer service.

Gdrag, I have a feeling that I'm probably going to end up doing HID's for my fogs as well. I'll probably go to a 4000k or 6000k for those. But then again I'll probably change my mind on that after I actually install the headlights. It's hard to find pics with headlight HID's and fog non HID's.

I have the McCullouch 6000K and yellow non-hid fogs...I used Yellow LaminX over the fogs...looks similar to the Lexus IS as mentioned earlier.. I like the look of the Headlight/Fog HID combo but went other route.

I have 5000k HID low beams and 4100k sylvania silverstar ultra (non-HID) for my fogs. There is definitely a color difference between the two, as 4100k is much closer to true white than 5000k which has a slight blue tint to it. Looking back now I wish I would have gone with 4300k for a more true white feel...but either way, I have the hid low beam /non-hid fog combo... I'll try to take pictures tonight.

I went thru ddm tuning, their apex cone for my R1, made an amazing difference, went with 6k and the wiring and the ballasts were top notch. Ive seen much cheaper setups sell for the same price

I bought and paid big $$$ for the 6000 HID kit in my Crossfires.
Loved them sooooo much I HAD to have HIDs for some of my other cars.
Got kits for around $40 on eBay and I can see no difference.

Just sayin'.

I would recommend going with a 4300k or 5000k AT THE MOST... for the maximum light output. You will still get that hint of blue you're probably looking for.

BTW, HID's pretty much suck in the rain. I recommend keeping the stock foglights as well, sometimes I use them in the rain and it definitely helps light up the road versus my 4300k HID's.. (all HID's suck in my experience, even stock HID's on BMW's, Mercedes, Porsche's, ETC.. (yes i have driven those))...

In short:
4300k for headlight if you can find them
keep foglights stock.

I have never heard that about HIDs in the rain. Everything I have read says that HIDs are better in heavy rain or fog. I see comments like:

"In poor weather conditions - such as rain, fog or snow - drivers also have much better spatial vision. "

"These bulbs produce brighter light than traditional halogen headlight bulbs and are better for use in heavy rain and fog."

I do not have any first hand knowledge as I have not installed HIDs yet, that is why I found this interesting. Could you elaborate on why they are worse in the rain. I have been looking to install HIDs, but I want the best possible vision in rain. Thanks

I've had HID's (lows and fogs) for 2 years now, and the only issue in rain/fog driving may be the fact that they are brighter and add to the refection (as in glare) more so than OEM halogens. This fact is probably exacerbated by choosing colors higher than 4300K. The bluer the light, the more glare you will have.

I'm ~ $20 from changing out my fogs with 3000K (yellow) just for this reason. But apart from this, I think HIDs are just an across-the-board improvement over halogens. Assuming a reasonable color is chosen. White is right. Blue ain't. At least for driving. If you like the "look" of bluer lights, this will be a consequence.

IMHO.

I had a difficult time in weather (rain/fog) with my 6k's on my bike, they definitely dont work as well as the halogens in weather IMO.

bmorgan, I had hid's on my BMW and thought they looked great. No issues using them in the rain and thought they made everything brighter. This is why I am interested in doing this for my crossfire as well.

Did the 4300K in lows & fogs - go much higher and you get the weird ineffective colors. Those blue to purple tints just do not help.

Thanks for the advice. I think that I want to definitely go with 43k lows and fogs. At the present, I never drive mine in the rain, but you never know what the future holds.

I use 6k for lows and highs
3000k for fogs

I also have 3000k's in my ranger for driving lights... bright. I can see half a mile on level ground

8k is too blue, 5k looks like halogen.

GDrag,

Did you get a bumper kit? I've been thinking if I want to get an aftermarket bumper or if I should just modify the stock one. I wasn't sure if they had kits that fit the XFire or what the deal was. What did you all specifically get from DDM?
