Default Service Indicator Question..

My service indicator came on today with a -124. I've only put 4400 miles on it since buying it from the dealership, so this will be my first service date. My question is, what does "service" mean. Just an oil change? Oil change and tune up? Lube job?..Etc....Just what does "service' entail? and does it have to be done by the dealer since it's the first one?..Thanks, any info will be welcomed.

If you look in your owners manual it will give you the items for a Service A (1 wrench) and Service B(2 wrenches)... A is basically an oil change and check the all the filters, brakes, fluids, etc...... there is a 'service checklist' posted here somewhere that you can print and record your service on.....

There are also instructions on how to clear the FSS indicator when your done......

If you have PROOF that the dealership recently changed the oil......then they must not have reset the FSS. Of all places that should know how to reset the FSS you would think a Chrysler dealership would know.....but, I know the only time I ever had a dealership do it (as the 1st oil change was free)....& they didn't....I had to do it!!!

If it was super recent.....just reset it yourself. BUT, if it's been like a thousand miles or something.....I think the dealerships have a way to reset it to some kind of proportional setting (not the 7000).....it starts at 7000....but doesn't necessarily go down mile for mile....it may let you go 8-9-even 10,000 miles if you drive easy & conditions are right. OR, even though set at 7000....it may only let you go only a few thousand miles...say if you live in 120 F heat & stay in 1st gear at 6000 RPMS all the time.

The issue is.....how do they know how you've been driving it....to reset it properly??

The monitor functions off a variety of parameters.....rpms,temp,miles, time, etc. It even has a way to monitor the electrical resistance of the oil....which apparently changes with age/viscosity. As an example.....when I had about 1,000 miles left on the monitor...I took the oil & filter some place to have it changed....I was going to reset the FSS as soon as I got home....but by the time I got home the FSS had already reset itself (probably based upon the electrical resistance of the new oil) back to about 2500.....I then reset it to the std (starting point) 7000.

Thanks for all the advice. Love this forum. But if I do this "A service" myself will it effect my warranty, since it's my first? I like doing my own simple maintenence?

Chris, I think they can only 'reset' it, I do not think there is any way to set up a partial or change the increment IMO
