Stupid is as stupid does
I've yet to divine any real advantage in the lighting protocol. Specifically, the ability to fire up either the left or right side parking lights, independent of each other. I see the theory, but no real practical aspect. Which is OKc I just ignore it.
Except, turning the switch too far to the left turns them on. Once, I happened to glance back and notice the left side lights were on. No problem. The other night I didn't notice when that happenedc and I woke up to a dead battery.
A german friend of mine told me that I "must pay attention, that's what a good driver does." Whatever.

lol, i sued that feature for the first time the other night when parked on a bsy but dark road, allowed me to leave the side parked into the traffic lit up.
Worked ok but i could live without it, maybe they'll take that feature away for the stipped down version of the Xfire

I spent 6 years stationed in Germany and these are German Parking lights. In Germany the streets are very narrow in most villages and you have to park with 2 wheels on the curb/sidewalk. It's the law that after dark the side of the car that's in the street must be lighted. So if your right hand wheels are on the curb, your left hand parking lights must be on and vise versa. Needless to say this is just for short term and not for overnight.
Interestingly, think these lights point up an automotive cultural difference. This is probably to the extreme, but hey, it's a conversation-starterc
Given that the electro-mechanical aspects of the car are German, the ability to turn on only those lights which are necessary, i.e. the side closest to traffic while parked, fits the popular impression of germans as precise, logical, accomplished drivers. Here in the ol' US we doing everything to excessc what the hell, turn ALL the parking lights on!

my boys thinks its cool to flip them left and right in quick succession while sitting in the driveway  . Could prob get cars to move over in traffic. Could prob. get you ticket also.
Life is like a box of choclates .... its easier to eat what you got instead of getting a new box cause you don't like those jelly things. You know the ones someone takes a bite of and puts'em bak in the box. I Always save them til them last, but never (well almost never) throught them way.
MB had lots of SLK parts left over, makes good use of em on the X-Fire.

You'll have to flip your turn signal back and forth if you want to do it while driving.
