Default Interior beginning to smell like crayons

I've got a few friends who drive Volkswagen Jettas, and if anyone on here has ever owned one, then you may know that the interior has a tendency to smell like crayons. The other day when a buddy of mine got in my car, he said it smelt like crayons. My first reaction was, "Oh great!" I just figured I was used to it, however, while driving tonight I realized that it REALLY DOES SMELL LIKE CRAYONS! From reading on a Volkswagen forum, they seem to think that it's the dash plastic that excretes this smell. So, any ideas (other than a tacky air freshener) on how to eliminate this smell? Or does anyone else notice this? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Maybe it's the inner kid in me, but I love the smell.

And for the record, mine has the exact scent at 33,000 miles.

I'll put it this way... my old Ranger developed a musty smell in the cloth seats that wouldn't die. My old Buick always smelled like a cinnamon candle because the previous owner allowed one to melt inside the center console.

No matter how many cigars I smoked inside that car, always cinnamon.

So... sweet German leather hybridized with Crayola is a very acceptable smell to me.

I believe there was a whole thread on "that used German car smell"

Don't know if anyone came up with the answer.

Seems ya'll found it.

Who knew?

Thirteendog's SRT smells that way,,,and once I realized that he had his crossfire humidor full of crayons I knew why,,,,if you look close at his dash you will see he has been useing the red one to color in his tach and speedo to give the appearence that he's really pushing his car to the limits

Got in a VW bug once.... it really smelled like crayons. Sometimes my car has the same smell buyt not as bad. I don't drive the crossfire as much now so it got a little worse but still not as bad as that VW beetle!

I tried putting some dry packs in the interior when I am not driving it.... it doesn't seem like they help much.

Mine always smells like-Alabama. Or Georgia or Tennessee or wherever I'm driving it.

I haven't had the top up in quite some time!

My family was poor---I did not have the 64 box of Crayolas with the sharpener; I was limited to the 16 box, and Cedar was not in there---HA!!!! I am with you; I would rather have this scent than most that are found in used cars.

How did you know I was using my Humidor to store my crayons. John you'd be really proud of me, I've learned how to color inbetween the lines.

Now if you and I can only teach Steve how to drive between them... we'll be doing good!

So you color on the hidden meaning of the coloring book?

I color inside the lined area...

I just could not resist.

That happened a lot on the 2000-2001 VW's. My wife's Jetta smells like a Crayon factory. I always heard it was the insulation beneath the carpet that did it. I don't mind it. My XFire doesn't have that smell.

My new (new to me but a 2006 with 34,000 miles) C55 smells like crayons constantly. My girlfriend, my friends, my coworkers - they all have something to say about the crayon smell. I am pretty sure an air freshener would diffuse the smell but I kind of like it

Wierd, a friend of mine even said it smells like crayons. I know it has a smell (and I think it smells good), but crayons?

I need to take a trip to wal-mart and sniff some crayons to see if it's right.

I like the smell of crayons. For you old timers,I'm the one who 20 or so years ago won the rechargeable kids car Shonney's was giving away. I carefully stayed within the lines of the official outlined image. After completing the coloring,I then buffed the picture with wax food wrapping paper. That smooths out the lump and bumps of the wax crayons, leaving a high gloss finish. Squirrel Crusher
