Help - Xfire needs Power Steering Box?
Hi Everyone,
Hoping you can help. My wife's 04 Crossfire (8,350k miles) has been spotting what looks like "Oil" on the garage floor (Noticed it about 3 weeks ago) she took it to the local stealership who diagnosed the problem as a leaking power steering gear box - Cost to repair $3850.00!
Any thoughts on the cost?, I am thinking about taking it to an indy (Who specializes in SAAB-Volvo, and who I've used for years).
It does'nt seem reasonable for a car with 8,350 mile to have a problem like this....
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,
DB

If it is a small leak try this. I would try this first. Price: $9.95

The dealer list price on a new gear assembly is $3,200. It's been a while, but I've seen them on ebay for less than $100. You can get a used from from a salvage yard for $100 to $200. It takes about 4 hours to replace, so an independent shop would most likely charge $300 to $400 to do the work.
www.carsteering.com sells them for $325 after core return. Thats where I bought mine. Just had the local dealer R&R it.
Before I replaced the steering box, I'd make sure to check the steering stabilizer.
Roughly the same area, and are known for leaking.
Here's a link....... https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...surprised.html

I would get a second opinion. Even if it is leaking it doesn't justify needing a new gearbox unless there is a noticeable steering problem or noisy. It could just be a line or fitting that's leaking

The gear box leak that I experienced was coming from a casting plug in the box itself. Not repairable. You go with a new box for $3200 or a rebuilt for $320 after core exchange.
