Question rear tire wear

Does anyone besides me wonder how much of the rear tire wear may be caused by the deployed "spoiler"?. I read a lot here about rear tire wear and the different results some guys report. Where I live (rural Georgia) most of my driving is with "spoiler" up. No squirrely driving, and 15K would be good to get on the rear. Just wondering...JIM

No ....... not me anyway.
I'm sure that a passenger puts more weight on the rear tires than the wing. As the wing is only about a foot and a half behind the axle the leverage is not too much, a passengers weight would probably split half and half front and rear.
It's tougher to do burn outs with a heavy passenger on board.

I read here somewhere that the spoiler gives 80 pounds of downforce at 80 mph, and 100 pounds at 100 mph. That would be the wing that goes up at 62 mph, not the big one that doesn't move. I guess that wouldn't be too much wear on the rear tires.

Thank you Fugley, This is a new reason why my tires wear out so fast. As I always have the wing up, that is sure to be the reason for the excessive rear tire wear.

Thats the new story and I am sticking to it!

I would guess the wing has minimal impact on rear tire wear. there are probably two main factors. The first is that it's a rear wheel drive and upon even moserate launch there will be a bit of spin as the tires grap, and depending on the amount of torque that would increase the spin and consequently the wear, which is why the fronts on my front drive car have always worn faster that the years.

The second and probably most influence would be in the rubber compounds of which the tires are made. Since their UHP tires, the compound would be closer to winter tires, that is softer so that at high speeds the rubber melts a bit to get sticky at high speed cornering, and therefore the constant melting on tire temp increases the more wear you get.

That's why I'm going to the Conti DWS's as it's not a super high perf tire, but a compromise for better wear, but one that since I don't push the NA all that hard won't hurt me, yet when I do won't punish me. It's a good compromise for me.

If you got 15 on the rears I'd say that's good (Michelins) I think I got around 12 out of my first set. I really don't think the spoiler has much to do with it. The Michelins are soft tires. Everyone I know who has the Conti's has gotten way more mileage out of them.

Beaner ... we all know you are a very conservative driver when in the xFire ..... and would "never" unleash the inherent forces that rest under your butt.... so ... as you say, just stick with the new story....

Thanks '6000rpm'. So.... rubber compound, passenger weight or leverage aside, with spoiler deployed/up it is the same as driving around with a sack of cement (90 Lb.) in trunk. My (Xfire) is a low numbered '04. Now I wonder why the spoiler was discontinued. Downward force is the same as weight/drag. JIM

My third set(since3/2010) of Conti DWS's will be arriving shortly. Tirerack.com even called me to be sure I ordered the tires for the same car, because "We just sold you a set in November"! Only getting around 15K out of the rears.

Yeah you are right about that. I always had Michelins or Pirellis on my cars. The last time I put rubber on the Xfire 'my tire guy' said he garantees I would get better mileage if I put TOYO's on.... ToYo's (WTF)..never heard of them! Wife says lets do it. ("her" car). They are getting thin, but have out distanced Mich Pilots by 3K.
Oh, BTW guess whats on my Caddie....TOYO's. Quieter than Mich's Too.

I have oem all-season Continentals on my roadster at 35k miles, and will certainly get another summer out of them. Maybe two. It basically is a sunshine driver so rain and snow are not an issue. On the other hand, for some reason, the rear tires on my SRT6 are wearing much faster. They're at 15k but might be doomed by 20-25k.

That's awful, I thought they had high ratings ...like 540 or something?

The OEM Conti's on my wifes 08 have only 10,000 miles on them & have substantially less tread left on them than the $67 Achilles ATR Sports on my 07 & they have about 17,000 miles on them.

If you drive like a 'granny' you will get much more wear out of your tires..... If you drive like 'the little old lady from Pasadena', not so much.....

I get pretty good mileage out of the Kumho Ecsta's...new 235/40 Kumho fronts put on 2 months ago to replace the stock Conti's... I am hoping to finish off the 255 Kumho rears this spring and put on 285's....

Let's see ...... wore out the stock Michelins, 3 sets of Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, 1 set of Yokohama AD08's. 7500 miles on my SRT-6. I don't pretend my Crossfire is a prius, I would be miserable driving it to save a few pennies.

Given normal driving, the treadwear rating and how bad is your toe-in (or out) is what wears out tires the fastest.

I'm lucky if I see 15k out of a set of rears. It could be that I go crazy at places like the Tail of the Dragon or in the Colorado mountains, too...
