That information is so old, it filed for Social Security last year.

Here's the current up to date lists right from Mercedes itself:

MB 229.5 - Multigrade engine oils (Specification 229.5) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids
MB 229.3 - Multigrade engine oils (Specification 229.3) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids

BC.

Question to those that are concerned with complying with the 229.5 spec. Are you planning to hold off oil changes until you get the wrench symbol?

Bat has the Lifetime warranty on her power train, so making sure to keep either 229.3 or 229.5 oil every 7k miles is the minimum needed, aside from the 5 year inspection bit.

Besides, the same oil and filter is used in the same engines in MB cars for 10k to 15k mile intervals, so we all know the oil and filter can last much longer. But for the Chrysler warranty, why not just follow the wrench symbol recommendations? They work quite well.

Some of us aren't afraid of running 7k mile oil change intervals with a top shelf engine oil. Especially in these engines that don't beat up on the oil nearly as badly as some other engines out there.

I'm running an interval close to the wrenches at 7-8K because I do it once a year in the fall when Ilsa goes to sleep for 3-4 months. works for me.

Saw Quaker State synthetic 5w40 at Ollie's today for $3.99 quart. Listed was the MB 229.5 approval.

I bought the mobil 1 oil on sale and a good filter and brought the car to valvoline instant oil change to let them do the work. They charged me like a regular oil change even though I brought the oil and filter. That was no problem for me, I felt it was worth it, however when I asked the technician if I could use the valvoline snythetic oil in the future , He told me no, it would be a bad idea. He says that once you start with the mobil 1 you have to continue using it or the seals or valves will get screwed up in the car. I don't know a whole lot about engines, Is this true.

I'll stick with the 0-40w Mobil 1.

Was the service guy 70 years old? This is an old wives tail. M1 was thinner than most oils of the time and could clean better than most oils 50 years ago and occasionally would find exit points. Very unlikely today.

If he's a young guy, maybe I'm the outdated advisor.

He works for Valvoline and suggested you not use it? WOW!

Ok, now I'm really confused. I use AMSOIL 5w-40 which is the European oil and it's not on the list? The specs for this oil is 229.31, 229.51. Not sure why the other Amsoil's are listed instead that don't have those specs. Something got screwed up for sure.

No reason to be confused.

AMSOIL doesn't spend the money necessary to get on the various approval lists put forth by manufacturers and standards agencies.

Here's my favorite quote about AMSOIL

"To me it seems to be a good oil sold by snake oil salesmen."

I've used some of their products, but I've been turned off by the weirdness of the reps selling it.
