Default Why was this car a failure?

I bought myself a 2004 Crossfire 3 weeks ago and I must admit whenever I peek out of the window and down into the parking lot, I just want to run down the steps, jump in the car and go for a cruise I think I have never been so happy with a car and I enjoy every bit of driving it. The whole design and every single part seems very well done, thought through and high quality. At the same time, I love how unusual these cars look and not everybody at a red light pulls up in one either.
Why did this beautiful vehicle not succeed? Why have they lost so much value that you can easily get a well taken care of, low mileage 2004 model below $10,000?? It is puzzling to me!

Not only does the car look sharp and has everything you could possible ask for in it, but also is it German engineering, which makes this car even more attractive in my opinion. Not to mention I talked to a former Chrysler Crossfire technician who admitted these cars were hardly ever in the repair shop, apart from minor issues like a broken cup holder or a little paint touch up.

Does somebody have an explanation?

I dont have an explanation for you, but aren't you glad that you are one of us instead of one of them. Enjoy your new car and welcome. It only gets better.

(Of course, $41,000 for a half-breed, convertible, 2-seater Mercedes that says "CHRYSLER" on it probably would make no sense in this or any other universe... but then, I see 1/2 ton pickups advertised for $30,000 now. So, I guess I go back to my original statement above.)

Marketing, cost and corperate stuborness!

I have a question for you now. If you were Mercedes Benz would you admit Chrysler had built a better car than your SLK using your very own parts?

It why Crossfire owners all seem to have a well deserved smerkish grin

Wait til you drive an SRT

Hey Pizza Guy,
I have to tell you this,
You could be writing an obituary and I couldn't take it seriously or finish reading it as long as you keep that 70's photo for your Avitar.
Time for a change

Yes, very interesting article and probably very true, too.

You know, the other day when I saw an older SLK pass me by, I thought to myself "that thing has got nothing on the Xfire" and had to grin
Neat little cars these crossfires! Maybe in the future I will upgrade to an SRT6...

You can't say Chrysler built it. Chrysler badges, but even they were made in Europe somewhere with the Mercedes Logo on I hear.
I think the only thing North American on these cars is dust.

Its really simple
1) They were a $36,000 Chrysler with a V-6, or up to $50,000 for SRT-6
2) See number 1
3) Horrible marketing; Comparible reviews for the SLK 32 and SLK32 AMG are very complimentary of the car even up to 2003 models; which is the same component structure as the Crossfire, however the Crossfire was crucified for the steering not being a true sports car, and being a $36,000 Chrysler Sports Car
4) MB did not want the red headed step child to outshine the SLK 32 and 32 AMG

*These are my opinions

1. too expensive for a Chrysler label (mostly referring to the SRT-6) $47K
2. front end looks like a Sebring
3. snubbed by buyers who normally buy American only
4. less than exciting color selection
5. automatic only for the SRT-6....huh??

i could say more but don't want to. i love this car anyway.

as to why they are not holding their value i cant say but i'm glad i got this one when i did.

My two cents! These poor cars have a "Chrysler" name tag on them despite who and where the were built. This is partly why they never sold. Typically Chryslers have always been lower priced than GM and Ford, but have always come through with either horsepower or stlyling to make the sales. I've been a Mopar fan my entire life and when these cars hit the market I thought they were too pricey for Chrysler to make a mark. At the time I was a 300M owner and it wasn't in the books to have a two seater in the house.
Take a look at the Chrysler Daytona. They couldn't sell these things even with a prayer. It was to the point where dealers were stripping them down to plain Chargers just to sell them. Now look at them. I think the Crossfire is headed in the same direction.
