Default New K&N filters arrived today!

I give up! I know that a thread was posted many months ago with pictures of the air box and cover but I have been unable to locate it. I received my K & N filters today (part # 33-2185) and when I went to install them, I found it difficult to figure out how to remove the cover. Maybe it is because I am afraid of breaking something. I see about 6 or so screws of unknown size that must hold the cover on. Also, on the left side as you face the car, the first screw is blocked by a block that seems to be used for the plug ignition. Can anyone aid me in instructions as to how to remove the cover so I can install these wonderful filters?

Sorry, I am not usually this thick headed. Oops:

Pull up on it, it just snaps into place. There are no screws.

If you still need pictures I'll go to the garage and take some. It just lifts straight up.

just pull up on that sucker from the rear. then remove 4 torx bolts to remove each filter. most importantly...make sure you line up the mass airflow sensor first to reinstall.

Well, DUHHH! How simple was that! Thanks a great deal guys and gals. I must say that was simple and kinda nifty.

No matter how we sometimes bicker about "STUFF" I can say I check this forum everyday and really enjoy the info. Its sorta like the extended family I had while in the Corps.

I'd you see K&N just posted a new part # for the Crossfire filters (33-2290) and of course the sizes are a millimeter or 2 bigger than the SLK320. Go figure, the see everyone buying them and of course they must change the size.

Better to ask someone who has done it before than to damage something that needs to be replaced. =)

if it is 1 or 2 mm taller...shouldn't make any difference (IMO). So the filter lasts 80,000 instead of the claimed 100,000 miles. I think the length x width dimensions are not changed...otherwise, the early adapters would have said something.

Here are the dimensions and it's not bigger in the height. I don't think the difference is significant it's just funny that it's different, when the original manufacture of the Benz filter has the same part number for the crossfire and the SLK320. Why K&N didn't is strange. No big deal, just info for everyone. Also the new filter is on $32.50 instead of $45.00 (at 4filters.com).

33-2290 Product Specifications
Product Style: Panel Air Filter

Outside Length: 10.563 in (268 mm)
Outside Width: 4.563 in (116 mm)
Filter Re-Oiling Amount: 0.64 oz (19 ml)
Weight: 0.8 lb (0.4 kg)

33-2185 Product Specifications
Product Style: Panel Air Filter
Height: 1.125 in (29 mm)
Outside Length: 10.5 in (267 mm)
Outside Width: 4.5 in (114 mm)

When I got my 33-2185 filters I matched them up with the stock filters and if there is a difference, other than the thickness, it's not noticeable and the K&Ns seal perfectly in the filter housing.

The difference is small, I just don't know why K&N came out with another part number. The one You first talked about works fine, They should just add the crossfire to that list, not come out with another number. The one thing I'm made at, is the price for the crossfire filters are cheaper than the SLK 320 ones. :x

Well, I paid list for my car and now DC is giving them away. I guess it makes sense that I would have paid too much for my filters too. :?

That is because price is not set by material costs, but rather by what they feel they can get for it. A person who buys an SLK obviously has money and is willing to pay more for things than the owner of the less expensive crossfire. Yes they are the same car, but its all about economics.

Each of those filters has about less than $5 of material and labor... and there's no doubt that they have recouped their engineering costs by now since the same engineering goes into every application they offer.

They did paint it, just forgot to add color pigments. WM...you should have gotten a discount for the colorless option. :P

Very minimal diff in sizes...basically 1mm all around. Selling prices are set based on what the market will bear, not just what it costs to produce. Give 5 accountants the same info and they will come up with 7 different answers (two of them did it twice...just to be diligent!!).

Okay...we've been through this sooo many times. He doesn't have 'colorless' or a lack of pigment, we have ALL the colors! White (aka Alabaster) is the presence of ALL colors of light, hence we have Graphite, Blaze Red, SSB, all built right into our paint!

Come on folks, we all KNOW it's the BLACK one's they forgot to pigment :!:  :!:  :!:

Just being curious but I thought that swirls counted as pigment.

That is the extra cost option. Dealer installed I believe. Called the Marbled look. Gives it an "aged" appearance.
