Default car cuts out while driving

Last week Car just died after driving about 15 minutes would not restart or crank. Waited about 30 minutes car cranked and started up, drove to PepBoys and car died pulling in to parking lot. Battery was original 2004. Replaced battery car was fine all week. Today drove about 20 minutes and car died at a light. will not turn over. Towed home. Have plenty of power all electrics working. Replaced the crank sensor in July. Any ideas?

High quality bosch cps? Cel light? Think the RCM has symptoms along those lines too.

Was a Bosch crank sensor. Any idea who sell the relay control module?

Car has been sitting for 3 hours now. Just tried to start it and it fired right up and runs. Does seem to be smoking a little from exhaust. Had no been doing that before.

Cold enough here my would "smoke" so to say.. is that the situation? Definately check your RCM Solder points in that link..

It is cold here in NJ but I actually have 2 04 xfires. The one that would die is the one with smoke now. The other one idling next to it has no smoke. Do you just build up the solder on the two posts on the 3 conections he has boxed in yellow?

You would heat the joints "carefully" and add a small amount to build it up for a good connection.

Do a close inspection of the joints to see if they need it.. just thought I'd toss that in right quick..

Sounds like a deal.. When I joined the forum about 5 months ago was reading everything I could. Checked my RCM just to be safe.. Joints looked good. Noticed mine had the white numbers with 07 on the board.. sample in pics has 04. Noticed on the Chrysler service records (link on this site) that it had been in twice for electrical (not specific in the records). Let me know if yours actually has 04 on it like the pictures in the link if you would..

My board is numbered 21035. 5 of the 6 posts were burned through the solder with gaps around the post. Chrysler wanted $385 for new one Mercedes only $205. MB Part will be here Thursday. I'll try to solder old one for a spare. MB said RCM was a recall item for them but Chrysler didn't do it for the Xfire.

Wow.. can't believe that many had bad joints! Since the car started last night, you probably could get away with a repair instead of a new one, but nothing wrong with having a spare with 2 xfires.. i'm sure it's on your list..check the other one?

The 09-04 S in this picture is the numbers I was wondering about.

Sorry the white number is 21-03 S.

The other actually had this problem when I bought it and was covered by the dealer. That was in 2006 and still under warranty. Both cars were turned in from leases. Both had less than 15k miles when I got them.

Will update after the new part is in.

Thanks again

Put in a new RCM and so far car starts every time. I'll fix the other and keep in the glove box as a spare.

Glad to hear the issue is resolved. If your not sure about your soldering skills, Tighed1 on here will do it for you for 10 bucks if you overlooked that in the link I posted in this thread. Basically a beer to work with and shipping back to you.

Did that a couple of years ago on my 04 coupe, even though it did not have any issues. Just did it as a precautionary maintenance deal ! Also, keep a crank position sensor in the glove box . . . I have one as spare, even though car has never exhibited that problem. Better to be prepared than sit on the road, or be hosed by a mechanic !!
