Default Skid plate under engine - is it necessary ?

The skid plate under the engine came loose tonight. I removed it and was wondering if it was a necessary piece under the car?

Any of you guys really see some of the crap on the roadways lately? I sucked up two notable examples in my 40 years of car ownership. Once, I sucked up a serpintine belt that was ran over, another time I sucked up a chunk of blown out truck tire. I for one am glad the panel is there. It'll stay, and help keep my cement garage floor clean.

I guess there are pros and cons. I took mine off years ago and it makes changing the oil much easier. I don't even have to jack up the car anymore when changing the oil. Also, I'd like to know ahead of time if I have a leak somewhere which will show up right away without the plastic piece in place. Besides, I think it helps my car perform better at the track with more air getting into the engine bay.

I haven't had mine since I bought the car. Didn't even know there was supposed to be one till I found this forum. I had to remove the one on my MR2. After changing the oil a few times, it tears, then it hangs low, so I took it off.
