Default Engine Choking

Hey there,

I have the standard model.
When I accelerate from a dead stop the car SOMETIMES starts to choke out. I have to put the car in neutral and rev a bit and the car will go. The Tech at advance auto parts plugged a computer in under the dash and said the Mass Air Sensor was bad according to his reading. I took the car to the dealer and he cannot find anything wrong. ANY SUGGESTIONS. Could the Sensor act like this??

Thanks

Quite often, it is not the sensor itself, but the plug connection to the sensor. See if you can clean up the contacts.
( And YES, the sensor can act like that - just try it with the sensor unplugged )

Do u mean to run the car without the sensor activated? Is there any other part that could do this thing of choking? What do I Clean the contacts with? Thanks!

I have more than once run mine with the MAF disconnected, as I had to disconnect it to remove my E320 engine cover, and forgot to hook it back up.
Use some very fine emory cloth, or an actual contact cleaner tool ( made for cleaning relays ) - you can pick one of those up at any electronics supply. There is also some 'contact spray' cleaner you can try.

If it comes to it, you can make a pencil eraser pointy and use that, just make sure you remove the left over rubber.

Thank You I will try it. It seems to becoming more often. It used to happen once in a great while. How would I know if its the Sensor?

Only sure way to know is if it does not improve after cleaning the contacts, then replace the sensor. If that then fixes it, it was the sensor.

HINT: If you decide you need to replace the MAF sensor, get one from a breaker like car-part.com, don't try any of the dealers, local or online : they all want @ $500 for one .....

The Chrysler part number is 05101204AA

Where is the Mass Air Sensor located and is it difficult to replace? Bought Electrical contact Cleaner spray to clean Contacts. Will use toothbrush with cleaner.

Look on ebay for a part and do NOT use a toothbrush! that will mess up the sensor. just spray it on and let it dry for at least half an hour.

Remove the engine cover, look on the drivers side of the black plastic stuff that goes from the engine cover down to the throttle body, you will see the connector.
You CAN use a tooth brush with the contact cleaner on the contacts, NOT on the MAF sensor itself.

It looks like this :

DO NOT BUY AN AFTERMARKET AIR MASS SENSOR!!!

Save yourself additional headaches and buy an O.E.M. one or find the Bosch counter part... They can be found new from $200-450. If you choose to by the cheap aftermarket one be prepared to buy it again, and again.
