Hello all,
I am in the process of re-designing the site. I have a few problems however, and I would like to see what everyone thinks about them.

Due to some modifications I made to this site, and some database corruption, moving the posts and users from this site to the new forum software is going to be extremely difficult. I am working on it, but I might need to get outside help in order to accomplish this. This may take some time, I'm not sure how long, or even if it is possible.

Here is my question. What does everyone think about moving to the new forum now? If we do this, everyone will have to re-register. It will be like starting over. I will lock this forum, but keep it up (it will still be accessible and searchable, but you won't be able to make new posts).

Pros:
New much more advanced forum software.
Ability to upload attachments.
Much improved gallery software.
New site will be completely ad free.

Cons:
Post counts will be lost.
Will have to search the old forum for many questions.

If anyone has any other pros or cons they would like to list, please feel free. I would like to see what everyone thinks, because the new site is basically ready to launch.

I think that it would be OK to move to the new forum now, as long as an archive of this forum exists, perhaps there could be a link to it from the new forum. It would also be pretty useful if some of the more technical posts could eventually be moved to the new forum for ease of research. Things like the paint repair tips, oil change FAQ's, etc.

 

It would be nice if we could keep our names on the other site?

Is there a way to notify us that the new forum is active so we can register before others find the site?

 

Good point Bob. How would we be notified of the new forum start date so we could keep our names? I think a new forum would be fine if the old one was available to look back on, and a link to it on the new one is an excellent idea, Berklund!

 

You will definitely be able to keep your names, if you would like. If someone would happen to take your name, all you would have to do is contact me, and I would send out an e-mail to the e-mail address you used on this forum to register with, and once you replied, I would assign that name to you. No one will lose their names.

 

If we can keep our name, then I think the benefits of a new forum outweigh the disadvantages.

I think it will be important to better regulate whichever forum we end up with.

 

I really think you should move to the new forum but retain all posts, etc.

The only thing I believe would be a plus is to purge the members list of anyone who has not been active for 1 year of more. I'm sure you have many members shown who no longer have an interest in the site or possibly never had a real interest to begin with. When these people are left on the list and never active/no posts, etc. it just takes away the benefits and value from the rest of us. Is there any specific reason why those names should remain as members?
I went through the list the other day and could not believe the number that have never had a post!!

 

Another thing to consider is that if we move to the new forum now, I can still work on transferring the posts. The site can be up and running, and if and once I can transfer the database, it will assign posts with the same name to that user. So any posts made here will transfer.

 

I say just do it !but,what about the count on the $1,000 bucks ? Does that start over ?Doesn't seem RIGHT start a contest then change or loose all count .Or was that your PLAN to begin with ?Kinda sneaky.

As for adds ,might as well PC sucks in L.A. anyway .And I haven't found any other ones useful.

 

I'm OK with any option that keeps the forum users active and minimizes site down time.
