Default Oil Quantity Confusion

I've seen 8.5 quarts often mentioned on this site as the amount of motor oil needed for a Crossfire. My factory manual says 6.1 quarts, and notes that the auto trans takes 8.5 quarts of ATF. I put 8.5 quarts of oil in my Crossfire and it was definitely overfilled. Can anyone clarify?

From "LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE 0-1" of the 2004 Crossfire factory service manual:

Most of us only put 8 qts of oil in during an oil & filter change. And by & large, the dip stick will show full. And some can pour in 8.5 qts with everything ok.

Like you, I put 8.5 qts of oil in when I changed oil & filter for the 1st time. I did this right before a ToD weekend at Fontana and kept getting the HI level alarm every time I went thru a curve up there. Came home & syphoned out about a 1/2 qt and no more problem.

Leave it to MOPAR to indicate the typical oil fill for good ol' Detroit iron in the 2004 Service Manual.

EXACTLY. To find incompetence like that, one usually must turn to government.
Not this time.

Your engine should get 8 quarts, not 8 1/2, as dedwards has indicated, and for the reason dedwards has indicated.

Your manual transmission requires just less than 2 quarts, (you can't over fill it, as it will just flow out the filler hole).

And I don't 'do' automatic transmissions....................................

I put in 8 litres all the time in an NA and an SRT and have had no HI signal, 8 litres is 8.45 quarts.
Someone is not draining all the oil.

Over fill of oil could be a reason for all those breather leaks ? i wonder

I don't think so. A combination of pressure and poor application of sealant at the factory is my opinion. And I've done quite a few re-seal jobs on those.

Sealant not adhered to one side or the other.
Sealant partially "set" when assembled.

I still change the oil "the old fashion way" by putting the car up on ramps and draining the oil pan from the bottom. So I'm confident I get nearly all, if not all, of the oil out of the oil pan. I'm not confident that removing the oil from the top by using a suction device will perform this task equally as well (but there are supportive opinions on this method). There is no question that the proper oil fill is 8 liters and it is just under 8.5 quarts as you've already stated. Down here in the States, being able to add just 0.45 quarts from that last bottle is next to impossible. But it could be done. Hard to believe that an additional 0.05 of a quart would trip the HI LEVEL alarm! But these cars are weird-acting when it comes to the electronics.

As I previously stated, with an 8 quart oil fill, the dipstick in my car registers FULL. That's good enough for me.

It is worth mentioning that the HI LEVEL oil alarm never came on until I drove the Dragon that weekend. All the driving I did locally before the Fontana trip, all the way up to Fontana and all the way back, no HI LEVEL alarm. Only the "twisties" triggered the alarm.

Same for me, 8 quarts makes it full. Just get two 5qt Mobil 1 jugs at Walmart. Use the residual in small motors since Crossie does not use any oil.
