Now that you mention winning. When was the last time the US won a war, WWII?

Can we stay away from politics. This is a crossfire forum. Lets keep it to our special cars.

Just a quick response: no, 1989 - that's when the major adversary went broke. Just a different kind of war. Also some little stuff later. (History, not politics).

Back to subject matter.. caught a post where a Merc. owner picked up the ECU Skreem and keys from a salvage car and got his back on the road.. I'd guess way cheaper than "new" prices now for just the skreem.. we know the BCM will initialize and accept a new vin .. how about the PCM ?

Suspect it took a DAS/STAR or something similar to initialize it. Could you send me the link please ?

I was just browsing a google search.. didn't bother to book mark it.

Bring me up to speed on the ‘little stuff’,my history knowledge is lacking.
That major adversary is back and China has come to the front.

SOS Diagnostics in Oregon, on their website they say they can reprogram an ecm to correct the vin #.

Someone in an other post is in contact with Modulegods and they think they can reprogram and completely eliminate the SKREEM module but they need a working set of parts to decode them. They need a keyfob, Skreem and PTCM. He can decode what needs to be reprogrammed in the PTCM to bypass the startup procedure.
( disable the SKREEM entirely ) anyone have a spare car with working parts. After a SKREEM failure we would need to send in only the PTCM to be reprogrammed at a cost of about $200

Is the PTCM Vin specific?

not many have a parts car laying around unfortunately :(

I posted in another thread if members in their area could call around to you pull a parts and salvage yards to see if they have any Crossfires.

Let's all pitch in a few dollars for a parts car haha. The skreem and damn traction control need to go.

Re: New SREEM pricing make me want to Scream!!

I wish I lived in Greenville, Jeff has three project/parts cars now.

We have a data logger in the lab that I could use to record what is going on between the SKREEM and PTCM/ECM. I cant program microcontrollers like some of my co-workers, but I have access to them as a resource.
It seems to me that one of these could replace the SKREEM (but not provide OEM capability, just provide enough to start and run the car without the original SKREEM and RFID in the key):
https://www.arduino.cc/

Adapting it to the CAN bus, i thought, would the the show stopper, but I was wrong - one of the guys in the lab says it has been done in other cars (but not to get around security, tho that is not the point).

This IS do-able, but I don't know enough about what is going on between the two modules. I think one of the GOOD tuners (Thinking of Josh or Rudy here) may be able to get around this.
But if we think the work around is a plugin module that will cost $79, we have another thing coming.

Perhaps for $500 it would be worth the effort... not sure.

So is this a Chrysler screem or a MB part? I don't understand why the module wouldn't be the same or close as the parent corporations other models. Does the parent company change the screem module ( aside from the outside box) from model to model? That doesn't seem cost effective.

It is a Mercedes part, 170 820 18 26. I have four of them, one in the car, one spare and two for some unknown cars.
So we can see what car first used it anyway, from the part number that would be the 170 series.
Not many sites list it but it is or was around $300, another site said it is not available now. I suspect it has been pulled back to Mercedes control.
