Default Where do you buy your oil and oil filter?

I was in a parts store the other day and saw that Mobil 1 0w40 costs $5.62 a qt. There book showed nothing in any brand for an oil filter. So where is the cheapest place to buy these items???

Walmart has the oil for $5.50 qt. The only place to get the filter is dealer or ebay. Most people also get an oil extractor because the car is so low to the ground. Filter is also up top. Hope this helps.

Oreilly Auto Parts has the filter for about $10.00.

Same for Checker/Shucks/Kragen, at least here in Arizona.

They are not the of the same "quality" as the old OEM paper filters and not even close to the current "fleece" filters. They are a much cheaper made paper filter. The STP filter Auto Zone sells for the Crossfire, I would not put in my car.

Wal-Mart has the Fram filter for $13. I have never used one, and I would much rather use the OEM, but if they go up to $60 I may have to try the Fram.

I would tend to agree, but have no proof in saying so. How do we know that the stock filter is better than the Fram? Just because it is stock doesn't mean that it is better. There are lots of examples where stock is not better. Brake pads quickly come to mind. A stock part is chosen for its cost/performance ratio, and in some cases, cost is the only concern.

With a part like an oil filter, one would assume that to ensure the least amount of warranty claim liability, they would use the best filter possible. I wouldn't necessarily bet on it, though.

It is an interesting question.

I did a bit of filter homework a few years ago and found the Fram were not the great filter they used to be. Also keep in mind that with oil changes in the 7k plus range, the filter has to stand up to that time span as well. You don't want a filter losing material to save a few bucks. I know an MB regional service guy who speaks very highly of the updated factory filter.

What else is new? With all of the outsourcing going on, it is hard to trust the quality of anything these days.

I used a fram oil filter on my 300M a couple of years ago when I changed the oil myself, then took it to the Chrysler dealer for the next oil change and was told by the service manager that they don't recommend fram oil filters on their cars.

Of course he'd say that.

I never used anything but Fram oil filters on my previous cars. I logged over 200K miles without any engine problems. If I can get the Mercedes filter for less than $20, I'll probably use them on my car. Otherwise I'll go with the Fram over paying $50 for the Chrysler one.

I've been buying the 5 quarts of mobile W0-40 for an average of $25 at Walmart for many years now.
