Back in 2011, I stayed in North Bay, Ontario during a work assignment at the TEMBEC paper mill in Temiscaming, Quebec supporting a planned shutdown of the site.

 

Doing a job like that, and speaking English it is a wonder you got home in one piece.
Back in the seventies my wife worked at a US subsidiary in Toronto and the plant workers went on strike. The strike got bitter as it went on with angry strikers on the picket line. The negotiations went on at a local hotel and one night someone decided to set fire to the presidents car and it burnt to a shell in the parking lot in the middle of the night.
The dumb assed arsonist picked the wrong car and destroyed an innocent hotel guests car.
Moral is don't mess with dumb hoser. Eh?

 

After spending 4 months up there assisting the Maintenance & Engineering departments with plans for the shutdown, the crafts went on strike the Monday the shutdown was to start, so the Plant Mgr decided to keep the paper mill running & postpone the outage. I probably stayed only a couple of weeks after & came home for good then.

I remember (except for the name) a very good steak house in North Bay that I tried to visit once a week. Restaurant had a small bar but it was set up nice. Usually ate my meals sitting at the bar.

And you're right when it came to understanding the locals in Temiscaming. English was definitely the 2nd language!

 

I am more of a friday morning departure type of person at the peace bridge in Ft. Erie.
