Dragon Convoy from Atlanta
Ok, here we go again, it's almost time for the social event know as "The Tail of the Dragon".
Once again, I will be volunteering to lead a pack to the Dragon. This will not be a 90mph 'your-pants-are-on-fire" run, but the curvy roads and mountains should provide a lot of beauty and some g forces in a few curves. But we will go at the pace that all are comfy with (and I run north GA a lot, the three tickets I've had this year were in MO and OK, not up north - I KNOW where the traps are up there!)
Ok, the plan is:
Thursday, April 3, 2014
I will be at GA400 exit 14 at noon for gas and lunch. THEN, promptly at 1 pm we will leave for Fontana. If you have never been to Fonatana or are unsure about what your GPS is telling you - meet with us and be ready to leave at 1pm.
GA400 Exit 13/14 is about 25 miles north of the 285 Loop around Atlanta. If you come thru downtown on I85 or I75, be prepared to pay a 50 cent toll just south of 285. Once you get to the exit, I will take it from there, we will see parts of US129, GA9 and GA60 on the way. There is 100% gas available in North Georgia around Suches and Blairsville but not at exit 13/14.
I will PM my cell number to all who want to go with us. I will come home Sunday.

Re: Dragon Convoy from Atlanta
We leave from Exit 13/14 on Thursday at 1:00pm! (This puts us up there to enjoy the road on Friday morning, before the MOB gets there.)
That, and it beats going to work. There is a pack of GenCoupes coming from Texas that you could also join up with - good bunch and I'm sure they'd be happy to have you.
I can put you in touch with "Wild Bill" if you wish.
**Edited my post to reflect the day - DUH!**

Alright, am I correct that your meeting place is just south of Cumming, Ga? If so it will be a challenge, doable but a challenge to get there at 1pm. I would need to leave no later than 4am. Mapquest has me driving through the center of Atlanta. Is traffic bad there at that time of day?

From about 10am to 3 pm you should not have a problem. Listen to 750am or 98.5fm as you get close and if 75/85 is messed up downtown, then just take 285 around and avoid it. But you should be ok.
Exit 14 is GA20 in Cumming and Exit 13 is two miles south, GA141.
I believe we'll meet at Exit 14 since the lunch choices are better there. If you want to leave a day earlier, you can sleep in my spare room, I'm three miles east of Exit 14, just off GA20.

Re: Dragon Convoy from Atlanta
thanks for the clarification on the location.
I am already leaving a day earlier! So I will just have to manage. Thanks for the offer. I am sure I can make up some time some where on the trip up. Ha!
I continue to work on the car getting her ready for the trip. Just ordered a few parts to complete a few more projects and I will be done. Woohoo

We will be meeting at the Cracker Barrel. Go up GA400 to exit 14, take the split on the ramp to the left, this takes you westbound.
Merge with westbound traffic, but stay right, after going over the overpass, it is the first right past the southbound traffic's ramp.
Their sign is tall, you will probably see it even before you exit.

In the First Picture, you have taken the exit and have THEN taken the left split and are going under the overpass, then vearing right to the ramp - if you keep left at that point, you are back on GA400 northbound -it's a half of a cloverleaf.
Traffic should be as light as pictured that time of day.

Just sent you a PM. Just follow 129 to Deal's gap, turn left there, and when you get to the Lodge in about 8 miles, turn right into the lodge and we'll be lined up to get GOING! Just try to be there by 9am or a little before and you are good to go.

US129 to US28
MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map
Set your GPS to:
300 Woods Rd.
Fontana Dam, NC
This should bring you directly to the Fontana Lodge
