Default Steering problem. HELP!!

Started having a strange problem last night. When I turn the XF to the left at slow speeds or while standing still, The wheel is very hard to turn and I hear a whoosing sort of noise, like air trying to discharge or something like that, coming from left side engine area. Turning to the right is not a problem and there is no noise. This morning I started up and had no problem until I got to work then problem reappeared. Anybody have any idea what this might be? Only 16k miles.

Of course the bumper to bumper just expired 2 weeks ago.....

I'm no expert on this but I'll give you some maybe's - fluid low? You have to use Power steering fuid especially for the Crossfire available from your dealership. Its 20$ a pint.
You may have some air in your line's. My son told me that if you unlock the ignition, turn the wheels lock to lock 3 or 4 times without the engine on and then check the fluid that would remove any air in the line. Not sure if this is hot air but my car was making a racket over the weekend do to me changing the pwoer steering line (CAI) and the system was low. I did the wheel trick after putting in the CHF11 and no more noisie and its nice and smooth.
Hope these work for you.

Red face Re: Steering problem. HELP!!

Had a Chevy with chronic problem making farting noises (air discharging) when the wheel was turned. It was the pressure hose every time. Wasn't expensive, but had to be replaced several tmes.

for whatever reason you got air in the line, and usually that is because of low fluid level...put the right fluid, as suggested...good luck

took car to chrysler dealer and they claim I need a new steering rack for a mere 3,500. my bumper to bumper expired 2 weeks ago. Called chrysler customer service immediately because I had originally brought the car in three weeks back for left turn steering farting noises, at the point there was only a slight problem steering left. In addition there were other squealing noises that were determined to be rear rotor issues. Those were replaced and those noises whent away. To make a long story longer, Chrysler is doing everything they possibly can to avoid paying for this repair. I'm also still not convinced this is a steering gear problem. Stay tuned.

Well that was mighty neighborly of your dealer to make such a generous off, especially since we don't have "Rack and pinion" steering.
I'd go back and ask to see the $3500 part.

check your fluid level....if a chrysler tech can't do that, then I guess I know why chrysler closed so many dealers....lol

Fluid is perfect and I meant to write "steering gear" and not steering rack. So yes fireamx you are correct. One week later and I still wait for Chrysler to make a decision on whether or not they are going to cover this repair, which legally - at least I believe, they should be as I have documented evidence that shows that this issue was brought to there attention before warranty expired.

I'm curious to know the outcome of this issue. My car developed the same problem except it is when turning right. Was the major repair required? Hope it wasn't a $4K repair.
