Talk me out of it...please
I had a small adventure last Friday night. My winter car, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited caught on fire while I was driving. When I saw the smoke and the flames coming up from the sides, I jumped out and ran a safe distance and called 911. I had just filled it up with gas, had a new catalytic convertor installed and and an oil change the week before.
There were flames coming form the underside of the car about midway. The firefighters arrived, put the fire out and waited with me until the auto club arrived. They were very nice and even offered to let me sit in the truck to keep warm.
Long story short, I am waiting to hear what the damage is to the Jeep but I am being pressured by everyone around me to buy a sensible, all season vehicle. Unless my knight in shining armour arrives soon (where is he????), having two late model years cars is not in the picture for me. Maybe I should just move to San Jose where my son is now working!
I would like to hear someone tell me to keep the Crossfire, it is a big source of "smiles" for me.

Late-model doesn't need to mean hard to maintain or expensive - I've got a '97 4Runner with over 240,000 on it and all it's ever needed beyond oil/timing belts/brakes/one clutch (all normal maintenance for any vehicle at all) is a starter and a sway bar (and that was my fault off-roading). It's a tank and is still going strong.
Fire coming from the middle of the car sounds like it could very much be cat-related... too early to say, but I think you or your insurance might be doing a bit of battle with the shop that redid the cats.

All the time I hear guys talking about a cool car that came along once in their lifetime. And its always followed by, "I wish I'd of kept that car" You'll regret selling it for sure -ya know they aint making them no moe!
Trade the jeep for something else. Since I got my xf, Ive driven an 89 plymouth acclaim (which outlasted 2 of the cars I bought my wife!) and now I drive an 2001 nissan sentra for my beater car. Incidently, we also own a dodge caliber for our family car and we love that thing.
A car that makes you smile doesnt deserve to be gotten rid of

It makes you smile. Smiling is good for your health and for those around you, therefore, for the good of your health you have to keep the Crossfire!
You don't drive it to please other peole. This is your thing and makes you happy and it's nobody's business but your what car you drive really is it? Just think of your poor Xfire and how sad it would feel to be cast aside due to no fault of its own lol. KEEP THE CROSSFIRE!!!

Hey - you're from Ottawa too!
Take everyone's advice - keep the Xfire & get something else for the winter time. I can help - a good friend of mine can buy you the vehicle that you want next to wholesale - he specializes in it. He's honest & fair.
PM me to talk.

thanks fellow xFire lovers. I knew I could count on you to reinforce my feelings.
The jeep may not be dead - apparently it was the front differential that caught fire - not sure why. I am waiting for a quote to see how much the repair will be.
Ottawa John, I will PM you. And unfortunately, that is not my home in the photo - 'tis a very nice B&B I used to stay at with my ex while visiting local wineries.
I am driving "Lucy" since this week we are having some unexpected warm weather but it is December 1st and she should be put away for a long winter's nap.

The weather has remained mild - no snow except a few flurries. I am driving my Crossfire while the mechanic fixes my Jeep. It will take a while. "Lucy" has performed well and I even got the chance to try the little feature where I can leave the heat on for a bit after I leave the car. Nice perk.
However, I have to say, I feel like I am committing child abuse. More than one stranger has said to me, "you should not have that toy out in winter".

Smile cause, ONE, it's fun to drive ALA Crossie.
Or smile cause, TWO, it gets you around and the warts and dings don't matter.
The second is easy to do if you have the first sitting in the garage.
roadster with a stick
and
a '96 GC Jeep beater.

KEEP THE CROSSFIRE AND CHECK OUT SAN JOSE!
There are a lot of fun drives over to HWY 1 and you'll get to stop by Alice's Restaurant on one of them...it's a novelty name, but the drive in that area is great.
