I was in the trunk of the Roadster today, trying to figure out a way to get the panels off that would allow me to run wire from a backup camera to the backup lights. While in there, I noticed that there is a button/fastener on either side of the trunk (picture attached). It seems to be designed to hold something, maybe a cargo net or something. I'm not sure, but it has some function that is not clear to me. Does anyone know what it was designed to do?

At least I know now, that the clips on the panel behind the seats are for umbrellas (and ball caps ).

(BTW, I never did figure out the easy way to remove/replace the back panels of the trunk - behind the license plate and over to the backup lights.) I'm afraid I'll break something.

 

Cargo net, I believe.

 

I have searched for a long time, but can't find any reference to a cargo net. maybe Chrysler never got around to making one for our car. I have looked at other companies nets but none seem to fit

To me it looks like a plastic "rivet"/clip to hold the carpet to the side of the car.

 

I'd agree, except that all of the other clips/pins made of the same material for that very purpose are different. Clearly, these have some engineered purpose and it seems to be beyond holding the carpet in place - but i'll be darned if I know what it is!

 

Seems to me that there was/is a crossfire cover that is made to maybe roll out and cover items in the back of the roadster from view. This might be a dual purpose thingy, that holds the panel on, AND also act as an attachment for the security cover.
Just sayin ....

EDIT... my bad ..... just realized I indicated "roadster" .... the factory cover I'm refering to was for a Coupe. Sorry

 

I could see that as a possibility in the Coupe but the Roadster trunk is not accessable from behind the seats...the only way in is through the turnk lid...

 

There IS a roadster-specific divider but I don't think the stops would hold up the bottom part of the lid. FWIW the coupe buttons are close to there too but more hidden. More than a few pieces are vestigal parts, like the "spoiler" rocker switch on the SRT. I think those buttons are just pop rivets for the rear. Picture of roadster divider below.

 

It looks like a fastener for a cargo net to keep things from flopping around in the boot. Would not be surprised if it was an option for the SLK320 that never made it to our vehicles.

Those are nuts that hold the side panels in place. You can unscrew them with your fingers.

 

Bingo! I guess to access the rear tailights. I haven't had to do that yet.

 

Maybe it should be called the rear glove box.

 

The coupe has them too, but they on the bulkhead.

 

A previous post some time ago said that a piece of the luggage set (duffel bag?) clipped to these. I have not tried nor do I know for sure. Seems a bit odd though.

 

somewhere else in the forums is a note that you do NOT have to remove anything to access the tail light bulbs. All you do is raise the tonneau cover and reach in and change the bulbs.

 

Nope, have to remove the interior carpeting to get to the tail lights since they're covered by it. Go in through the trunk, not necessary to have the tonneau open. Takes about 10 minutes a side to do them as I've already done both brake lights on my car.
