I used search and a number of posts came up on this problem. There may be some solutions here.

This is a long shot, but a common problem on the automatics is for them to leak fluid from the transmission adapter plug housing. This is the large electrical connector located at the front passenger side of the transmission. According to the following post on a Sprinter forum (Sprinter vans have the same transmission), this plug could also be related to your problem of being stuck in first gear.

Stuck in 1st gear - Sprinter-Forum

If you do have a plug leak your transmission may be low on fluid. Unfortunately Chrysler didn't provide a dipstick and the filler tube is sealed with a locking cap. The good news is the replacement of the leaking adapter plug housing is not all that difficult if you are mechanically inclined. I replaced mine while changing the transmission fluid. You can get all of the parts needed including fluid at the following website....

Transmission Fluid-OEM Fuchs 4 Liters 2002-2011

Finally, here is a link to a great post from waldig describing the replacement of the leaking adapter plug housing....

Hope this helps.

Can you put the shifter in the drive position? Do you have any warning lights on?

Dealer has it now. replaced igintion section payed $1820 they said they tested it and drove it all weas fine I get there to pick it up and it is still fu--ed up. I pay all that money and I am still at square one. even after replacing the gear shift assembley. When I ask where is the old one they look at me and said Uhhhhh we threw it out. Do a search on this forum... I could swear I have seen this issue on here before with a solution to your problem.

damn dealerships....first would check fluid level, the sensors in these cars, well, they are sensitive...next, Throttle Control Module, if not low on fluid, or connections are shorted, etc. There is a temperature sensor on the tranny as well, as well as a pressure sensor. All must be working, correct voltage and all. Most of the time this will be cause by a bad connection, or low fluid.

Our of curiosity, does your 05 still have the original battery? It it has a white top, that indicates it is original. Batteries that are starting to go south can cause a lot of weird problems with these cars, that is why it is best just to change them out every few years to avoid being left in the lurch.

Certainly a lot cheaper to replace the battery than some of these expensive components, like the shifter assembly.

Did they get any transmission codes during your two repair cycles? This would be from the TCM or Throttle Control Module.

You could be in limp mode, however, I am not sure that when that happens if codes are generated. A reputable dealer should be able to figure this out.

Finally, yarn on that dealer that charged you 1800 Somolies for nothing. Sheesh. Good luck and keep us posted.

Your transmission has a fault, to prevent damage and to keep you moving the car goes into what is called ‘Limp Mode’.
The fault probably lies in one of the plates at the bottom of the transmission, get the trouble codes read and see if they point to a particular problem.
