Plastic rear window?
Great Forum! There is a tremendous amount of information available and I've already learned much about the Aero Blue '06 Roadster I purchased in July. I've read several threads regarding rear window issues and noticed that on my car this window is clear plastic / vinyl - much like the window on my old TR6 and MGB. A closer inspection revealed the glass had been removed (or fell out) and this plastic / vinyl window was glued and stitched in place. I believe the top is original as the wires for the defroster have been retained. It doesn't leak, looks OK but I know how quickly this material degrades - especially under FL's sun. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen or done this type of repair and if I should start looking for a glass unit as a replacement. Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.
If the unit appears to be professionally glued and stitched into place, you may want to consider yourself fortunate. And if you are able to keep the car garaged, even better.
Obviously the prior owner dealt with the frustration of the infamous glass/canvas separation with an acceptable alternative. In fact it may even be a new aftermarket top. You say that defroster wires are present on the new plastic panel? My guess is that modern plastics are more UV resistant and that the "replacement" will serve you well for a long, long time.
Enjoy your peace of mind.

I agree with Kane. If the rear window is doing what it is supposed to do, don't make the change. Since you are in Florida where the heat is so high (we are in Winter Park) , you might use this time to look for a good top shop in your area and see what the charge will be.
Seeing as how you need to replace the window as well, you have an added expense there. You might want to search this site and elsewhere and see if you can pick up a glass window.
Don't worry - it's all worth it! This is a great car!
