Oil Question Mobil1 ECF 0W-40 or Mobil1 0-40
Mobil1 European Car Formula 0W-40
What oil do you use the Mobil1 European Car Formula or the regular Mobil1 0W-40? Anyone know of any good deals? This car takes 8qts of oil correct? I want to change my oil before I drive the 1100 miles after buying it.

The owner's manual calls for oil that meets MB spec 229.3 / 229.5. (such as Mobil 1 0W-40 full syn European Car Formula). The local dealerships in my area have switched to PENNZOIL ULTRA (syn) EURO 5W-40.
The manual calls for 8.5 quarts, my 07 has had 10 or 11 oil changes now (>76,000 miles) ....I have always just put in 8.0 quarts.....it's never used a drop as far as I can tell.
At some Walmarts the Mobil 1 will cost you about $6.50/QT. Sometimes you can get much better deals at places like Advance / Autozone/ Oreilly's, etc..
Don't ever use non syn oil....or even syn that doesn't meet 229.3 / 229.5.
PS, ROCK CHALK.......

Same here - putting in 8.5 quarts makes the oil level alarm go off on curves.
I make it 8 quarts even.
Also, as Chris said, you want something that meets the spec - Mobile 1 0W-40 is the easiest to find and according to an MB bulletin published several years ago, has the highest viscosity at running temperature of anything else out there that IS on the MB list.

Vehicles with the Flexible Service System FSS from MY1998-2004 can use 229.5 or 229.3 oils.
If you are planning to change your oil early, I see no necessity to restrict to 229.5 or 229.3 . And if you are following the above, then you should install the full 8.5qts.

When I was in Florida, I found a deal at O'Rielly's on the Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W40. It was $5.49 per quart. Needless to say, I brought back an Avalanche full of the stuff!
Looking around on Amazon today for various motor oil, I found the following:
Somebody has to have the contract for this. Price isn't anything special - Heck, Mobil1 ECF 0w40 can be had for practically the same price; maybe cheaper at Wal-Mart.

I haven't owned my XF long enough to have looked into this issue, so I'm not taking a side. I simply remembered that Scotty Kilmer did a video on Amazon oil earlier this year.
Here's another YouTube video comparing Amazon Basics Full Synthetic to other oils. Not an advocate of using the Amazon product, but video shows some interesting results.
"Mobile oil rebate fraud. Twenty Four bucks."
OK. I sodomized & murdered my family. We're in the same cell."
Castrol Edge 0W-40 meets the MB spec. It's $22.95 for a 5-quart jug on Amazon. Free shipping and overnight delivery if you've got Prime. I'm thinking of stocking up on this.
Mobil always posts a list of "Participating Retailers".....but they always honor any retailer that you submit.....his receipt would have clearly shown the retailer....Mobil chose to honor the submission...he did not commit fraud.
A sense of humour is sadly lacking these days, something that is really needed in these days with the stand up comic routines from you know who.
