Default Top seam separation

I noticed that the seam on the back passenger side across from the rear window is no longer holding together. It "looks" fine when the top is up but when the top is going down you can see a gap. Should I take it to a specialty shop to have them look or is there an easy fix?

If you are one of those with the original factory top, its time for a new top.
But Mark, tops are expensive, can't I just pay someone locally to fix it?
Sure. That will cost $150 to $300 or more and you STILL have an old top. Next, the other side will let go, what are you going to to then, spend another wad to fix that AND still have an old top? Replace the top.

If this is a replacement BAS top, contact Rebecah at BAS. The two BAS tops that I know of that failed were replaced under warranty with no argument from BAS.

Lovin' my new top - some really good friends replaced mine for me at the Eureaka meet, one morning before breakfast.

If you have comprehensive coverage check with your insurance company, they may cover a new top ... they covered mine a couple years ago under window damage

I purchased the car from JMac and he had the original top replaced by a Chrysler dealership back in 2013. We have an excellent top shop here in Cincinnati and I am going to have them look at it. My boy is garaged 100% of the time here at his home.

Update to my top situation...

Took it to a second dealership on Thursday last week to have inspection done a second time and was contacted on both Friday and Monday by Chrysler Care case mgr. to be told he hasn't been able to talk with anyone from the dealership. He finally spoke to them Tuesday and he had to talk with his supervisor about coming up with a resolution. He called back today with a price of $300 for the replacement top + labor. The warranty cost he originally quoted was over $1500.

I'm still not happy about a 2 1/2 week time just for a resolution and an out of pocket cost, but I guess it is better than having to pay the entire bill. I also wanted to note that the case manager that I dealt with was very professional and he called every day to give me an update on the entire process. Glad to be done with it.

Any top Chrysler used was the original top and they are known for failing. We have many people on the forum who still had their tops replaced under warranty around the same time as your's and ended up having the window fall out a few years later. I would go with a replacement because if the seams are separating other problems are around the corner for that top. Not worth fixing.
do yourself a favor and purchase a brand new and beautiful looking BAS top. The price is fantastic for those tops.
There is another company called EZtops and they reinforce the rear window even more by stitching a pocket/seal around it. Never heard of those failing but it's also more expensive. Most on the forum and Facebook opt to go with BAS for price reasons and it's great quality. Looks great, is treated for a year (so no material treatment needed for a year) and the color just looks fresh. You can pick what color you want depending on the color of your vehicle I have seen some nice combinations.

If someone repairs your seam for free (not sure how that would even be done), go for it but be aware that your rear window is going to fail it's not if but when and who wants water in their vehicle? If you check closely from inside and outside my guess is the signs are already there given it was replaced in 2013.

The only "free" repair I know of was the Factory Top Recall Warranty, but that ended at the ten year mark after the car was built. I have two letters from Chrysler, one for each limited Roadster I've owned, where they indicated I had ten years to take advantage of it. Again, they were 05s originally sold in 05/06 so that warranty went away eight years ago.

A new top for $800 or so plus $300 installation (if you dont want to do it yourself) is a STEAL. A set of tires costs that, but the top will last 10-15 years.

Unless it's a buddy if OP. Regardless...a new thread popped up where someone says his self-glued window has fallen out yet again. Don't waste your time people...get a new top. There is a lot of pressure on the top, the seams and let's face it....cloth tops are not made to last forever. If that is still the original you got your money's worth. Why not make the car look brand new by adding a beautiful new top and enjoy it and forget about it. When seems start to separate it's just the beginning...why chance more damage?
