Default Lancer Evolution / WRX / SRT6 - On a Sunday Drive

I finally had some time to go out and put some miles on my SRT6 since installing the SL55 Intake system. It’s a nice sunny day and I start out a the same highway I was ticketed on last Saturday so I take nice and easy for a few miles before I get to Grimes Canyon Road (Hwy 23), turn left and have a spirited little run (but not to spirited) before I get to the canyon section.

Just my luck I get stuck behind a slow Honda Civic thru the canyon (can’t pass on these switchbacks) I finally get a chance to pass when we hit the straight entering Fillmore. I decide to head East on 126 – a nice 4 lane blacktop highway. For those who don’t know this highway – It meanders through orchards – miles and miles of Orange, Lemon and Avocados has far has you can see. I maintain the speed limit through town and then set my CC at 65 once outside the city limits. I drive along for about a mile (very light traffic) and approach two cars doing 55 MPH (one in each lane) and I can see that the car in the left lane is slowly passing the other so I get behind him. Soon I see two cars coming like gangbusters in my rear view and I think OH YEA!

I see that my new company is a Lancer and WRX having a little fun with the Lancer right on my rear bumper. As I pass the car in the right lane, I signal to get in front of him so I can pass the car that was in front of me – but maintain my speed. The Lancer then gets behind me and so on. When there is enough room for the Lancer to get back in the left lane, he jumps on it – has do I – and the race is one.

We leave the WRX behind has he still needs to get pass the other cars and I began to pull from away from the Lancer. By the time I reach 150 MPH I am a good 5 or 6 car lengths ahead and still pulling away. I then start to slow down to the as I see traffic ahead. Soon I am doing the legal limit behind a small group of fine, law abiding motorist and I signal and do the legal routine to pass. No need to endanger innocent motorists. Once in front I wait for the Lancer to clear and games on again only this time he waits until he is along side me to “go green”; and again I dust him from the start and begin to pull away.

About 7 miles later we approach the only traffic signal from Fillmore to Interstate 5. I slow down and the light turns red so I stop in the right lane. Apparently the WRX had passed the Lancer and pulled up next to me. Light goes green and it’s back to racing action – He was little quicker then the Lancer and stayed on my tail to about 70-80 MPH and then I started to really pull away and had about 2 to 3 car lengths on him by 140 MPH when we approached a car in the left lane (his lane) he pulled behind me and after we passed he went back in the left lane trying hard to catch me (I had slowed just little as we passed) and soon there were a 3 cars in front of us, two in the left lane and one in the right lane with the car in my lane (right) in front of the others.

Now – I could have made a move between them but, racing on open road is one thing – involving other cars in traffic is another, especially at those speeds, so I brake hard and slow the SRT way down but I guess the WRX was not going to be beat, so he passes to the left across the broken double yellow line into oncoming traffic. (I thought for sure I was going to see something really horrible) but the oncoming car swerved out of the way and the WRX was gone. The Lancer had caught up to me and decided he to would slow for the traffic. He rolled down his window and gave me the thumbs up. Once we were past the traffic he took off and I decided to stay with the traffic figuring I had my fun, made my point and did not need to press my luck. But it was fun.

Final Score:

SRT-6 = 2 Lancer = 0 WRX = (-5)

There were 2 Evo's at the track today and even with mods it would have been tough to touch them. One ran an 11.4 and the other ran a 12.2. I think these guys mod them for the quarter mile and don't expect that our cars can pull in the midrange. Way to have some fun in California and not make the helicopter news. I wish you could of picked a few avocados while you were at it. I bet there is an Evo and WRX forum blowing up right now about some small car with a big wing. I had all kinds of people wanting me to pop the hood after I ran a 13.28. They didn't even know what a crossfire was. Much less it's a handmade motor from Germany.

I raced an EVO8 slightly moded, 2 rolling starts and 1 standing. I took both rolling but he hung on my back bumper, the standing start was a different story. I jumped out on him but he launched that car and sucked me up, passing me like I was in a N/A. Be ware EVOs can RUN!

Yeah, I killed an WRX STI on a Highway run bringing mine home from the dealership. That was good way to "get a feel" for it...

The Suby guy seemed cool about it, until the last comment! Haha... I was like WTF?!?! He's honestly going to say that, while driving a sedan with the most garish spoiler in the history of mankind? Eh to each his own.

I just wish Chi-Town could've caught him at a light... ooh la la.

That is hilarious coming from the owner of one of the ugliest sedans on the planet. ROFL!

Ah well... to each their own. I'll keep my "Girly" SRT6... YEAH BABY!!!

He had to try and redeem himself and make himself feel better after being destroyed! What a douchebag, he titles the SRT-6 as a "Pontiac"!

I like how he claims to be pumping 425 HP out of his STI - he should smoke a stock SRT6 if he does. Maybe he just needs the driver mod to complete his setup.

I agree. Not sure where he thinks the square box he is driving looks good. No style at all. They do run well but I wouldn't drive one.

Great video.

Also - Great kill on the WRX and Lancer!!!

Cool deal BB...BUT, you left out one important detail..

How much did the intake help?

I have 20 Acres of Avocados behind my back yard - so many on the ground I have to use a shovel to scoop em' up and put in the "green" bin.

You know how Asthmatic these SRT's are; I would have been smoked.

Seriously - the SL55 intake really unleashes some hidden power in these cars. I can see why those who installed the NEEDSWINGS intake or developed and installed their own rave about the difference.

Once I get the LET 185mm pulley and Iridium Plugs installed; along with the ECU tuned, I will take it to the 1/4 mile track and see just how well it performs. I'll need to learn the proper launch technique, but I hope to be in the low 12's with the stock PS2's.

LOL the Sub STI is one of the ugliest cars ever made. Total garbage of add on parts, wings, scoops. The Xfire smoked his *** bone stock. I wish I had saved my pennies for an SRT when I bought my limited but at least I can live though you. LOL.

You're in SOCAL right? Which 1/4 mile track are you going to? I didn't know there was one that's still open with Palmdale being closed down.

I've been to Irwindale a long time ago and that's only 1/8 mile and too crowded. I only had one run in 2 1/2 hours of waiting and that pretty much put me off into doing drag racing.

They have yet to post the 2008 schedule but I know they will be having an event sometime around Jan 19th. Don't know how crowded it will be but I only want to get in a few runs "for the record".

Never raced the 1/4 mile track - I just hope I don't do this number:

Getting back to Brian's story, notice how several times both lanes were blocked by traffic and how the right lane was actually moving faster than the left passing lane? This is so typical of So. Cal driving where the expression "Keep Right Except to Pass" has no meaning. When traveling through the midwest the other month on vacation I was completely amazed by the discipline exhibited by other drivers - drive in the right lane, pass in the left, then immediately get back into the right lane again. The only times I've ever seen that in So. Cal is when returning from Las Vegas at 2 in the morning.

Overall, that video was pretty great. It's standard Ricer Street Racing Procedure to be blown away by how impressive it is and then at the last minute they have to knock it to make themselves feel better...

I posted it on my myspace page jus' 'cause...

Of course I already know the 6 could have it way with a stock STI, glad to see it lay the smack down on a modded one too.

It's funny that they have to keep 'racing' the SRT6 until they "pull away"... HAHAHA! Losers.
