Default Busted intercooler

Last night my wife went to the gym and was in the srt6. From day one I`ve told her over and over when she drives that car do NOT pull up to parking curbs. Stay way back because the car sits too low. Well, she called me and said something was leaking from the car when she started to leave.

I drove up and looked at it, it was antifreeze. Since the gym is directly across the street from my shop and she parks at the shop when she goes there I just pulled it into a bay and went back home. When I got here this a.m. I lifted the car up and found the mounting leg on the intercooler was busted off.

I called her and asked if she hut the curb she told me yes. I don`t know why she didn`t tell me last night. So anyway it hasn`t been a good day so far. I couldn`t find one in the aftermarket so I`m stuck waiting 2 or 3 days from the dealership.

Has anyone else had this problem? I couldn`t help but notice when I would use my hand and pull back on the front fascia it pushes the intercooler air duct back which pushes the intercooler back.

What a stupid design.

I hadn't noticed but I will be more careful parking around curbs now.

She must have rode up that curb pretty hard to do that!

Hmm, maybe the curbs and parking lot bumpers are lower in Va. I haven't found one yet that my car hasn't cleared easily. I usually have at least 1/2+. I have NEVER scraped the front...

Actually she is. I let her drive the daytona to work and she backed into a truck that she saw and knew was there. I`m out of hotrods for her to wreck.

Here's what it looks like with the front bumper off, the air duct just slides into the back of the front bumper.

The scary thing about this is I just know I or my wife are going to do the same thing at some point. I make it a point not to get near curbs, yet when I get out, I am suprisingly closer to them than I think. And, I agree, not the most well thought out design.

This is why women have such a bad reputation of driving. Im not stereotyping all of them, but id say 90% do stupid completely AVOIDABLE damage to cars because they simply do not think. She should respect the GOSH DAMN car! If she cant do that, buy her a $2000 throw away car, just like a child, until she proves herself worthy of something nicer. There is no excuse for what she did. This is not a 4x4!!!!

As far as everyone griping about the location of the intercooler not sure how many forced induction cars you guys have owned but almost every one of them have the i/c located in the lower bumper area so that the most air will flow over the unit w/o it blocking the air the radiator needs. Its a perfect location. Its one of the responsibilites you bear when owning a forced induction car.....that goes back to my first point above.

The good news(if you want to call it that) is that this is the perfect time to UPGRADE!!!! Buy a bigger unit, it will probably cost you the same as factory anyways. HDDP got a large custom unit for around $450 i think. Check out the LET motorsports one as well. It would be silly to go back stock IMO.

One good way to prevent hitting the curb with the front end is to BACK IN TO THE PARKING SPOT . My wife won't even touch my SRT6, I think she has only asked me to let her drive it one time, I just gave her a funny look and she has never asked again .

Or do what I'm doing to my heat exchanger, move it forward and add cooling fans. IMO installing a larger heat exchanger is just going to give you more volume of coolant that is not being cooled unless you are moving down the road above 35 MPH.

Oh we all understand the cooler has to be where it is located. The problem with the design is that there is no room for flexibility. If you touch the front fascia you are putting pressure on the cooler. There should have been at least 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of give built into it whether with an air gap or some sort of foam cushion.

I hope none of you ever have this happen to your srt6. I`m lucky in that I fix cars for a living and it was no big deal for me to replace it. If you can`t do it at home and have to take it in to the dealer then you`re going to suffer way more than I did. I`m out $160.00 for the cooler. That`s my cost. Dealer list was over 3 bills.

And yes, when I got home last night and could finally talk to her I told her to call the insurance company today and get a quote for full coverage on a 10 speed bike.

Well, use this as some leverage against her someday. Hell, I could use some sometime!

You are welcome, I got the fans mounted on my heat exchanger yesterday and plan on installing the temepture gauge sending unit tonight. I'm still waiting on the temepture gauge. There is a butt load of pic's in the post I made titled Moving The HE foward to add cooling fans.

I would respond to that, but I will not have a battle of witt's with an unarmed BOY or MONKEY.

I just thought it was funny. Also, if you researched before you replied, you would see I could greatly help you out if you would only ask.
